Today we come to a text that, on its own, probably says all that needs to be said. Romans 9:22 in context:<\/p>\n
19 You will say to me then, \u201cWhy then does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?\u201d 20 But who indeed are you, a human being, to argue with God? Will what is molded say to the one who molds it, \u201cWhy have you made me like this?\u201d 21 Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one object for special use and another for ordinary use? 22 What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the objects of wrath that are made for destruction;<\/strong> 23 and what if he has done so in order to make known the riches of his glory for the objects of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory\u2014 24 including us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? 25 As indeed he says in Hosea,
\n\u201cThose who were not my people I will call \u2018my people,\u2019
\nand her who was not beloved I will call \u2018beloved.\u2019\u201d
\n26 \t\u201cAnd in the very place where it was said to them, \u2018You are not my people,\u2019
\nthere they shall be called children of the living God.\u201d
\nRom. 9:27 And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, \u201cThough the number of the children of Israel were like the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them will be saved; 28 for the Lord will execute his sentence on the earth quickly and decisively.\u201d 29 And as Isaiah predicted,
\n\u201cIf the Lord of hosts had not left survivors to us,
\nwe would have fared like Sodom
\nand been made like Gomorrah.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\nThis could be historical wrath (70 AD type of thing) or eternal wrath.
\nGod\u2019s wrath is a \u201cchoice\u201d or \u201cwill\u201d of God (v. 22).
\nGod has endured the sinfulness of sinners but will not forever.
\nGod has endured in order to show his glory.
\nThis is all God\u2019s mercy.
\nWhatever you have to say, one thing is clear: Paul thinks God is a God who acts in wrath; Paul thinks God responds to human sinfulness with wrath; Paul thinks even God\u2019s wrath visibly demonstrates his glory.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Today we come to a text that, on its own, probably says all that needs to be said.
