We are working through John Goldingay\u2019s multi-volumed \u201cFirst Testament\u201d theology, and we are in volume 2 \u2014 Israel\u2019s Faith<\/a> $\"\"$ <\/em>. The first theme in Israel\u2019s faith is God, and this chp \u2014 151 pages long! \u2014 is worth the price of both of the books. I want to provide a brief sketch of the major ideas canvassed in this chp, though I\u2019ll focus on pp 96ff because that is where we stopped last month.
\nHe sketches Yhwh\u2019s presence, love, hostility, and the two sides to Yhwh\u2019s person and activity. Excellent, and if you are keen on doing a series on God in the First Testament, this would be a great place to start and also a good outline for a series. Goldingay\u2019s approach to say what he sees and not to say what he believes (or what evangelicals are taught to believe).
\nA question for us: What do we mean when we say God is \u201cpresent\u201d? Maybe these ideas from Goldingay can trigger your response. What do we mean when we say God is \u201cabsent\u201d? Do we believe God can be \u201cabsent\u201d? In what senses?
\nHow is God present?
\nAccompanying presence: with God\u2019s people.
\nSettled, local divine presence: particular places (Ex 33:7-11)
\nAttentive presence: God listens (Ps 50)
\nActive presence: results show God\u2019s presence (Ps 18; 97)
\nNarrative presence: tells the story (Ps 63:2)
\nPersonal presence: Gen 18.
\nIntense presence: Exod 40:34-38
\nAnd God can be absent in an accompanying, attentive, personal absence.
\n\u201cEveryone knows that the OT God is a God of wrath; the NT God a God of love. Oh no they don\u2019t\u201d (108). Maybe the best section I\u2019ve read in the two volumes of his work. Here are some themes he sketches about God\u2019s love in the OT \u2026 and there is discussion for each and I can\u2019t include but one reference for each:

\n11. Carrying (Ps 85:2-3)
\n12. Getting over (Mic 7:18)
\n13. Pardon (Jer 36:3)
\n14. Risk (Gen 22:1, 12)
\n15. Sadness (Hos 6:4)
\n16. Letdown (Jer 26:3)
\n17. Grief (Gen 6:5-6)
