I want to present Jesus in some contemporary media images.\u00a0 Today Jesus is like Oprah.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jesus sat down on the edge of Jacob\u2019s Well near Sychar and said, \u201cWelcome, friends! Today\u2019s show will feature a Samaritan woman whose story you just have to hear. Her\u2019s is a story of heartbreak and shame, of isolation and pending hopelessness. I\u2019ve invited her to come and tell us some of her story. Just a few glimpses into her life will help us all, I\u2019m sure. I know you\u2019ll be kind. So, please, give it up for \u2018the Samaritan womaaaaan!\u2019\u201d [wild applause as Jesus stands and hugs the woman as she enters and sits on the edge of the well]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus <\/strong>(in a serious, affirming\u00a0tone): Now, darling, don\u2019t be nervous. We all love you here. I see you fidgeting. There\u2019s just no need to wring your hands. Just tell us what you think we should know. Relax, honey.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: Ah, OK. Well, this was such a surprise. I usually come to the well when no one is here. Seeing you, a Jew and a man, also, and all your friends, I just\u2026just didn\u2019t think I could do this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: Now, now, darling, you stop that negative talk. See. You are here and you are brave. So brave. Isn\u2019t she brave, everyone?\u00a0 [applause]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: See, the audience knows you\u2019re brave.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: Oh, you all are so kind. But I was of the impression that you hated me. All Jews hate Samaritans. That\u2019s how I grew up. [Tears well up in her eyes.] I\u2019ve lived my life being hated by Jews and shunned by my own people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: That ain\u2019t right. That just ain\u2019t right! You tell me who! I wanna know <em>who<\/em> would treat you like that. I may be a Jew and a man, but I love everybody. I only shun the shunners, dear. I am with you and for you, y\u2019hear?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: You are so kind, Jesus. I mean to meet you here and have you accept me. Well, it\u2019s just all so new and feels\u2026so\u2026crazy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: You go on, honey, \u2019cause it is crazy. Crazy love for all women who\u2019ve been shunned by \u2018the man.\u2019 You know what I\u2019m talkin\u2019 \u2019bout?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: I sure do. I know it in my mind and I feel it in my very body. The atmosphere of shame hangs on me like dark, rainy clouds. I\u2019ve been dumped by five low-down men, and the man I\u2019m with now\u2026well, we ain\u2019t married.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: I hear ya. Men. [shakes his head]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: But, hey, it was\u00a0women, too. I mean snooty women in the village who kept on giving me the \u2018stink eye\u2019 all the time. That\u2019s why I come out here at noon, when it\u2019s hot. To avoid their gossiping tongues<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong> [to camera]: Mmmmmm, gossiping tongues\u2026I just don\u2019t know what you mean,\u00a0hmmmmmmm. We\u2019ll be right back and hear more from the Samaritan woman. [commercial break]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus:<\/strong> We\u2019re talking with the Samaritan woman today. Her\u2019s is a story of rejection and loss. [turns to woman] Let me ask, if I may, what keeps you going? I mean, others have broken under much less\u00a0weight of the shame and isolation that you feel. But, look at you, you\u2019re here. Tell us\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman:<\/strong> What keeps me going? Well, one thing that doesn\u2019t is all the wrangling about worship\u2013Where to do it? How to do it? Who\u2019s got the truth? Y\u2019know what I\u2019m saying?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: [waves his hand like batting something away] Don\u2019t get me going now. You don\u2019t want me to get going\u00a0about worship. All I can tell you is my Father is seeking worshippers right this minute. I mean right this minute, y\u2019all.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong>: That is my passion\u2026to worship God. [she cries]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: Now, now. You can be a true worshiper in Spirit and in truth. Can\u2019t she, peo-Pull!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman<\/strong> [looks shocked]: Who says?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus:<\/strong> I do. I say.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Woman:<\/strong> I am waiting on my hero to come. When the Messiah comes, he\u2019s gonna make everything right. I just know it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: I am your hero; the wind beneath your winds. [woman cries\u2026audience applauds]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: [looking into camera] Everyone today gets a gorgeous jar made in Sychar\u2026a beautiful water pot hand-crafted in the ancient Samaritan way. Good bye, everybody.
