But there\u2019s a great example of what is meant and it can be found in Matthew 2. I quote the whole chp in the extra text below.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what Mary meant and here is what Zechariah meant when they spoke of an unjust ruler. They at least had in mind Herod the Great. He was a corrupt, murderous, savage, merciless king and he was on the throne in Jerusalem. <\/p>\n<p>And Messiah Jesus was destined to rule above and beyond Herod the Great. Not as a result of violence; not as a result of usurping the throne through military victory \u2026 but through a kingdom of a completely different order: through compassion, through love, through self-denial, through the cross, through the power of the resurrection, and through a community that would surround and follow Jesus. On top of this, the family of Jesus would have to manuever around this corrupt leader \u2026 escaping his clutches by fleeing to Egypt. He would attract to himself people from the far reaches of the Roman empire.<\/p>\n<p>An advent activist works against such rulers \u2014 in all kinds of ways.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">1<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi\u00a0<a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a> from the east came to Jerusalem <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and asked, \u201cWhere is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east <a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a>and have come to worship him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">3<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">4<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>When he had called together all the people\u2019s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ <a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a>was to be born. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">5<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIn Bethlehem in Judea,\u201d they replied, \u201cfor this is what the prophet has written:<\/p>\n<p class=\"PoetryBegin\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry2\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">6<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u201d\u00a0\u2018But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.\u2019<a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a> \u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\">\u00a0<span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">7<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">8<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>He<br>\nsent them to Bethlehem and said, \u201cGo and make a careful search for the<br>\nchild. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and<br>\nworship him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">9<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east <a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a>went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">10<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">11<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>On<br>\ncoming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they<br>\nbowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and<br>\npresented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">12<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"SectionHead\">The Escape to Egypt<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">13<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>When<br>\nthey had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. \u201cGet<br>\nup,\u201d he said, \u201ctake the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay<br>\nthere until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to<br>\nkill him.\u201d <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">14<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">15<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>where<br>\nhe stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord<br>\nhad said through the prophet: \u201cOut of Egypt I called my son.\u201d<a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">16<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>When<br>\nHerod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious,<br>\nand he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity<br>\nwho were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had<br>\nlearned from the Magi. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">17<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry1\">\u00a0<span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">18<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cA voice is heard in Ramah,weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.\u201d\u00a0<a class=\"ftnt decorated-link\" name=\"fnt_7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"SectionHead\">The Return to Nazareth<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">19<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">20<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and<br>\nsaid, \u201cGet up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of<br>\nIsrael, for those who were trying to take the child\u2019s life are dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">21<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">22<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>But<br>\nwhen he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his<br>\nfather Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,<br>\nhe withdrew to the district of Galilee, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">23<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>and<br>\nhe went and lived in a town called Nazareth.
