James tells us that human anger can never bring about God\u2019s will, and he has to be speaking here into (at least) the zealot option of the 1st Century. The Zealots, if you remember, believed God\u2019s will was so urgent that violence was necessary. Notice these words of James:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Jam&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">19<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Jam&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">20<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><i>for man\u2019s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires<\/i>. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Jam&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">21<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>Therefore,<br>\nget rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly<br>\naccept the word planted in you, which can save you.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br>\nThere is a qualitative comparison at work here: <\/p>\n<p>Human anger vs. Divine righteousness.<\/p>\n<p>And the use of the present tense (\u201cdoes not bring about\u201d) gives one the impression that the entire scene is being sketched before our very eyes: this is not the way to bring about that.<\/p>\n<p>What is God\u2019s will\/righteousness here? The NIV\u2019s (quoted above) \u201crighteous life\u201d makes this a little too individualistic (and only individualistic). The best way to describe the righteousness James has in mind can be seen in three passages: James 1:22-27, 2:1-4 and 3:13-18. Good deeds, compassion and justice for each person, and peace.<\/p>\n<p>Anger, even violent behaviors, will never bring about these things.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do humans accomplish God\u2019s will?
