Feminists and traditionalists should be able to agree, for instance,
\nthat the structures of American society don\u2019t make enough allowances
\nfor the particular challenges of motherhood. We can squabble forever
\nabout the choices that mothers ought to make, but the difficult
\nwork-parenthood juggle is here to stay. (Just ask Sarah and Todd
\nPalin.) And there are all kinds of ways \u2014 from a more family-friendly
\ntax code to a more accommodating educational system \u2014 that public
\npolicy can make that juggle easier. Conservatives and liberals won\u2019t
\nagree on the means, but they ought to agree on the end: a nation where
\nit\u2019s easier to balance work and child-rearing, however you think that
\nbalance should be struck. <\/i><\/p>\n

They should also be able to agree
\nthat the steady advance of single motherhood threatens the interests
\nand happiness of women. Here the public-policy options are limited;
\nsome kind of social stigma is a necessity. But a new-model stigma
\nshouldn\u2019t (and couldn\u2019t) look like the old sexism. There\u2019s no necessary
\nreason why feminists and cultural conservatives can\u2019t join forces \u2014 in
\nthe same way that they made common cause during the pornography wars of
\nthe 1980s \u2014 behind a social revolution that ostracizes serial
\nbaby-daddies and trophy-wife collectors as thoroughly as the \u201cfallen
\nwomen\u201d of a more patriarchal age.<\/i><\/p>\n

No reason, of course, save the
\nfact that contemporary America doesn\u2019t seem willing to accept sexual
\nstigma, period. We simply don\u2019t have the stomach for permanently
\nostracizing the sexually irresponsible \u2014 be they a pregnant starlet, a
\nthrice-divorced tycoon, or even a prostitute-hiring politician<\/a>.<\/i><\/p>\n

In
\nthis sense, ours is a kinder, gentler, more forgiving country than it
\nwas 40 years ago. But for half the public, it\u2019s an unhappier country as
\nwell. <\/i>
