<\/span>We need now to turn to the sadness of how the church appears to many, and to how the messianic community connected to James was behaving (James 4:1-3):<\/p>\nWhat causes fights<\/i> and quarrels<\/i> among you? Don\u2019t they come from your desires that battle<\/i> within you? You
\nwant<\/i> something but don\u2019t get it. You kill<\/i> and covet<\/i>, but you cannot
\nhave what you want. You quarrel<\/i> and fight<\/i>. You do not have, because you
\ndo not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures<\/i>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nHere are the incriminating words: fights, quarrels, battle, want, kill, covet, quarrel, fight, pleasures.<\/p>\n
\nNot good. The messianic community had both the potential and the
\nevidence to be schismatic and seething in dissension within itself.<\/p>\nToday
\nis a day of admission and confession, a day to admit that the church
\nhas been like this, is like this, and will continue to be like this. We
\nmust admit that we are part of this \u2014 and it doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019d
\nlike to jump ship, start up your own group, and get things right for
\nonce. You and I are still a part of the Story called Church, and that
\nStory has ugliness.<\/p>\nToday, then, is a day of confession to God
\nand to one another that we are at fault, in word and deed and thought,
\nfor dissension, for schism, and for ugly relations.
