$\"NTWright.jpg\"$ <\/span>One of the stickiest points in all of this new perspective vs. old perspective discussion is what to make of Romans 2:1-16, and Wright makes it clear that he thinks Paul means exactly what he says (Justification: God\u2019s Plan & Paul\u2019s Vision<\/a> $\"\"$ ,<\/strong><\/em>). [I posted the text at the bottom of this post.]<\/p>\n

First, he says this is no charade \u2014 no pretending someone can be justified by works so we can set them up for the hammer in chp. 3.<\/p>\n

Second, doers of the Torah will be justified. That\u2019s what Paul says in 2:13. (It\u2019s in your Bible too.) Wright argues that one does the Torah through the Spirit. But this is not the synergism that says \u201cI do part\u201d and \u201cGod does part.\u201d<\/p>\n

Third, the scene is the great assize \u2014 last judgment \u2014 and Jesus is the judge. The judgment is based on works \u2014 and Paul says that in Romans 2 and 2 Cor 5:10 and it is implicit in Rom 14:10-12. And Wright enters here into a clear set of lines about how important works is in the Pauline sense of judgment.<\/p>\n

All this stuff, fourth, about pleasing God is not the logic of merit but the logic of love and relationship.<\/p>\n

Fifth, this again makes the Holy Spirit important \u2014 more important than in the old perspective.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

2<\/span>
\nYou, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else,
\nfor at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself,
\nbecause you who pass judgment do the same things. \u00a0<\/a>2 <\/span>Now we know that God\u2019s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. \u00a0<\/a>3 <\/span>So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God\u2019s judgment? \u00a0<\/a>4 <\/span>Or
\ndo you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and
\npatience, not realizing that God\u2019s kindness leads you toward
\nrepentance? <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/a>5 <\/span>But
\nbecause of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are
\nstoring up wrath against yourself for the day of God\u2019s wrath, when his
\nrighteous judgment will be revealed. \u00a0<\/a>6 <\/span>God \u201cwill give to each person according to what he has done.\u201d a<\/span><\/a> \u00a0<\/a>7 <\/span>To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. \u00a0<\/a>8 <\/span>But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. \u00a0<\/a>9 <\/span>There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; \u00a0<\/a>10 <\/span>but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. \u00a0<\/a>11 <\/span>For God does not show favoritism. <\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/a>12 <\/span>All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. \u00a0<\/a>13 <\/span>For
\nit is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God\u2019s sight, but
\nit is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. \u00a0<\/a>14 <\/span>(Indeed,
\nwhen Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by
\nthe law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have
\nthe law, \u00a0<\/a>15 <\/span>since
\nthey show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts,
\ntheir consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now
\naccusing, now even defending them.) \u00a0<\/a>16 <\/span>This will take place on the day when God will judge men\u2019s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares. <\/p>\n
