Targets include\u00a0Kim Kardashian\u00a0and\u00a0Kanye West, whose lush lawns stand out from above; Beverly Hills residents, who keep filling their pools;\u00a0Walmart, which gets its\u00a0 bottled water from the state and profits from it<\/a>; and hotels accused of \u201cwater misting\u201d their guests, reports theGuardian<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n
Whether #droughtshaming<\/a>\u00a0will actually effect change remains to be seen, but when the city of Montecito made its water usage data public, exposing people like\u00a0Oprah Winfreyfor wasting, overall water usage dropped 48%, reports\u00a0 Gizmodo<\/a>. And when the hashtag first took off last summer, eco-minded vigilantes took to the streets, helping municipalities issue fines and even posting pictures and videos with people\u2019s street addresses. \u201cThe class differences are very real,\u201d an environmental historian tells the Guardian. \u201cThe correlation with wealthier people here is very simple: They have bigger yards.\u201d (Tree ring analyses suggest this drought is the\u00a0 worst in California in 1,200 years<\/a>.)<\/p>\n
