Naguib Sawiris, one of the region\u2019s wealthiest men, said \u201cthere is no limit\u201d on what he is willing to spend to buy an island from Italy or Greece \u2014 where thousands have been arriving \u2014 to provide the refugees with a new home.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreece or Italy, sell me an island,\u201d Sawiris tweeted. He even suggested a name for the new country: \u201cHope.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said there are dozens of empty islands off of Greece and Italy that could handle 100,000 to 200,000 people. And he rejected a suggestion that it was a \u201cridiculous\u201d idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a very simple solution,\u201d he told CNN Friday. \u201cThey sell the island to me and I\u2019ll make a temporary shelter for these people. I\u2019ll make a small port or marina for the boats to land there. I\u2019ll employ the people to build their own homes, their schools, a hospital, a university, a hotel,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Sawiris, the chief executive of telecom group Orascom TMT, said the people would be free to return home at any time or stay on the island.<\/p>\n

Greek and Italian officials were not available to comment on the proposal.<\/p>\n

Sawiris said, \u201cI sometimes think the politicians don\u2019t have a heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll I need is the permission to put these people on this island. After that I don\u2019t need\u00a0<\/strong>anything anymore from them. I\u2019ll pay them for the island, I\u2019ll provide the jobs, I\u2019ll take care of all the logistics.
