President Obama\u2019s Op-Ed <\/a>piece on his heath care reforms. Here\u2019s an excerpt:<\/p>\nThere are four main ways the reform we\u2019re proposing will provide more stability and security to every American. <\/i><\/p>\n
First, if you don\u2019t have health insurance, you will have a choice of
\nhigh-quality, affordable coverage for yourself and your family \u2014
\ncoverage that will stay with you whether you move, change your job or
\nlose your job. <\/i><\/p>\n
Second, reform will finally bring skyrocketing health care costs
\nunder control, which will mean real savings for families, businesses
\nand our government. We\u2019ll cut hundreds of billions of dollars in waste
\nand inefficiency in federal health programs like Medicare and Medicaid
\nand in unwarranted subsidies to insurance companies that do nothing to
\nimprove care and everything to improve their profits. <\/i><\/p>\n
Third, by making Medicare more efficient, we\u2019ll be able to ensure
\nthat more tax dollars go directly to caring for seniors instead of
\nenriching insurance companies. This will not only help provide today\u2019s
\nseniors with the benefits they\u2019ve been promised; it will also ensure
\nthe long-term health of Medicare for tomorrow\u2019s seniors. And our
\nreforms will also reduce the amount our seniors pay for their
\nprescription drugs. <\/i><\/p>\n
Lastly, reform will provide every American with some basic consumer
\nprotections that will finally hold insurance companies accountable. A
\n2007 national survey actually shows that insurance companies
\ndiscriminated against more than 12 million Americans in the previous
\nthree years because they had a pre-existing illness or condition. The
\ncompanies either refused to cover the person, refused to cover a
\nspecific illness or condition or charged a higher premium.<\/i><\/p>\n
Christian Science Monitor<\/a> has a piece with responses. Lowry<\/a> thinks there\u2019s a grass roots populist revolt.
