Paul gets all the credit, but Peter paved the way, and the speech is Acts 10 is breathtaking.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">On the next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him.\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:24<\/span>\u00a0The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting anxiously for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:25<\/span>\u00a0So when Peter came in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him.\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:26<\/span>But Peter helped him up, saying, \u201cStand up. I too am a mere mortal.\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:27<\/span>\u00a0Peter continued talking with him as he went in, and he found many people gathered together.<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:28<\/span>\u00a0He said to them, \u201cYou know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, yet God has shown me that I should call no person defiled or ritually unclean.\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:29<\/span>\u00a0Therefore when you sent for me, I came without any objection. Now may I ask why you sent for me?\u201d\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:30<\/span>\u00a0Cornelius replied, \u201cFour days ago at this very hour, at three o\u2019clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and suddenly a man in shining clothing stood before me\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:31<\/span>\u00a0and said, \u2018Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your acts of charity have been remembered before God.\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:32<\/span>\u00a0Therefore send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. This man is staying as a guest in the house of Simon the tanner, by the sea.\u2019\u00a0<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">10:33<\/span>\u00a0Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Notice these crucial words of Peter: \u201c<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">He said to them, \u201cYou know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, yet God has shown me that I should call no person defiled or ritually unclean.\u201d Entering a Gentile\u2019s house like this is understood by Peter to be contrary to the law (either Torah or halakah); the word could mean \u201cunconventional\u201d. However you read it, what Peter does here is not something he\u2019s done before. New boundary lines for Peter. Why? God has shown Peter, through his previous vision, that no human being is unclean \u2014 clearly the implication is that it is now within Torah or (Peter\u2019s understanding of) halakah for Peter to enter and fellowship with this Gentile.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Here\u2019s another critical statement: \u201cSo now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.\u201d This Gentile and this Jew know they are in the very presence of God. They are attending to the voice of God.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Missional work frequently enough requires serious boundary-breaking efforts. God has to break into Peter\u2019s very Jewish-observant world to reveal to him that fellowship with Gentiles is acceptable.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Does this mean Peter would have been eating Gentile\/unclean food?<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Peter the church finds one who paved the path toward the Gentile mission.
