\"Paul.jpg\"<\/span>The Spirit spoke through the leaders at the church in Antioch and directed them to set apart Saul and Barnabas for the work to which God had called them. Acts 13:4-12 clarifies what that work is:<\/p>\n

13:4<\/span>\u00a0So Barnabas and Saul, sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.\u00a013:5<\/span>\u00a0When they arrived in Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. (Now they also had John as their assistant.)\u00a013:6<\/span>\u00a0When they had crossed over the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus,\u00a013:7<\/span>\u00a0who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.\u00a013:8<\/span>\u00a0But the magician Elymas (for that is the way his name is translated) opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.13:9<\/span>\u00a0But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at him\u00a013:10<\/span>\u00a0and said, \u201cYou who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness \u2013 will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?\u00a013:11<\/span>\u00a0Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!\u201d Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand.\u00a013:12<\/span>\u00a0Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n


<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

They are to proclaim the word of God in Jewish synagogues, and they do this on the island of Cyprus \u2014 across the whole. In this process of preaching the word in synagogues and gospeling, they encounter a magician, a Jewish false-prophet named Bar-Jesus (son of Yeshua). Again, we are using Beverly Gaventa\u2019s The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a>\"\"
\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n

A proconsul named Sergius wants to meet with Saul, also known as Paul (13:9!), to hear the word of God but the magician Elymas, who reminds of Simon in Acts 8, attempts to dissuade them. Here is how Paul responds to the magician:<\/div>\n

The gospel spills out from synagogues into the public realm; in fact, into the upper levels of the political realm on Cyprus to Sergius Paulus, who seems a bit like the Ethiopian eunuch who stands in contrast to someone who opposes the gospel.\u00a0<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
The gospel is opposed by spiritual forces.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
Paul, directed to the work by the Spirit and now filled with the Spirit, addresses the man in power and with miracle. This event reminds of Ananias and Sapphira \u2026 and the proconsul believes. But observe why: \u201cbecause he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.\u201d Paul was telling him the story about Jesus.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
