The short form is this: What you believe, or claim to believe or\u00a0say<\/em> you believe \u2014 not what you do or how you act \u00a0or what the results of your actions may be \u2014 defines you as a person and makes you look \u201cgood.\u201d It how your life will be judged by others and by yourself. In 19th Century France, the gastronome Jean Brillat-Savarin told us that \u201cyou are what you eat.\u201d In 21st-century America, almost all of us seem to have concluded that \u201cyou are what you say you are.
