One of the richest Advent texts is this one:<\/p>\n

All of this happened to fulfill the Lord\u2019s message through his prophet:
<\/em>
\u201cLook! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and he will be called Immanuel
(meaning, God is with us)<\/em>\u201d (Matthew 1:22-23).<\/p>\n

Advent is about \u201cGod with us.\u201d It is about Incarnation. But \u201cGod with us\u201d is more than simply a proposition about Incarnation, a proposition about God doing the really unthinkable \u2014 taking up humanity by becoming human \u2014 a proposition about christological natures. \u201cGod with us\u201d is more than that.<\/p>\n

Immanuel is promise \u2014 promise given from Adam and Eve and Abraham on, promise expected from the days of Israel\u2019s yearning for redemption, and promise now fulfilled.<\/p>\n

Immanuel is redemption \u2014 God with us is the good news, the gospel story that God has now taken up our case completely, God identifying with us\u00a0in order to redeem us<\/em>. \u201cImmanuel\u201d explains \u201cYeshua\u201d (YHWH saves).<\/p>\n

Immanuel is mission \u2014 if God is with us by sending the Son, the Son is with us as carry on the mission of making disciples (Matthew 28:16-20). It is not accident that Matthew both begins his Gospel on this note: \u201cGod with us in promise\u201d becomes \u201cJesus with us in mission.\u201d<\/p>\n
