18:12<\/span>\u00a0Now while Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews attacked Paul together and brought him before the judgment seat,\u00a018:13<\/span>\u00a0saying, \u201cThis man is persuading people to worship God in a way contrary to the law!\u201d\u00a018:14<\/span>\u00a0But just as Paul was about to speak, Gallio said to the Jews, \u201cIf it were a matter of some crime or serious piece of villainy, I would have been justified in accepting the complaint of you Jews,\u00a018:15<\/span>\u00a0but since it concerns points of disagreement about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I will not be a judge of these things!\u201d\u00a018:16<\/span>\u00a0Then he had them forced away from the judgment seat.\u00a018:17<\/span>\u00a0So they all seized Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue, and began to beat him in front of the judgment seat. Yet none of these things were of any concern to Gallio.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\"BemaCorinth.jpg\"<\/a><\/span>Paul\u2019s preaching leads to the charge of saying things against the Law, and we can read Galatians 3:19-25 or Romans to infer and guess and speculate what they might have in mind in particulars. Anyway, some Jews think Paul\u2019s gospel is contrary to the Law.<\/div>\n

Gallio\u2019s stance is noteworthy: he doesn\u2019t really care about debates Jews have within their communities. Which is to say, the Christian faith \u2014 Paul\u2019s gospel \u2014 is perceived by this Gentile, Roman ruler as a Jewish gospel.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Just as significant for Luke is to describe a gross miscarriage of justice in front of the Bema seat: \u201cthey\u201d beat Sosthenes, the president of the synagogue. Who did the beating? Here\u2019s what we find in Beverly Gaventa\u2019s fine commentary (Acts Abingdon New Testament Commentaries<\/a>\"\"
\n<\/strong><\/em>): Since Gallio has sent away the Jewish opponents of Paul, she argues this is Gentile anti-Jewish behavior. The language, though, is not clear enough and Sosthenes not known well enough to know if Sosthenes is a messianic Jew (possible) or a nonmessianic Jew. The irony, though, is palpable: in front of the Bema seat there is injustice.\u00a0<\/div>\n
