The White House invited four of the country\u2019s top evangelical pastors to attend President Obama\u2019s\u00a0speech this morning<\/a>\u00a0[recently]\u00a0calling for immigration reform. The move is a testament both to the importance the issue has\u00a0come to assume in the evangelical world<\/a>-including among leaders who have battled Democrats on social issues like abortion and gay marriage-and to\u00a0the White House\u2019s eagerness to enlist evangelicals to help to counter conservative opposition to the idea of a path to citizenship for illegal immigrations already in the U.S.<\/span><\/div>\n

Further, as I\u2019ve noted many times over the years when debating both Democrats and Republicans who fall back on empty phrases to justify putting the amnesty cart before the enforcement horse, we are not a \u201cnation of immigrants.\u201d This is both a factual error and a warm-and-fuzzy non sequitur. Eighty-five percent of the residents currently in the United States were born here. Yes, we are almost all descendants of immigrants. But we are not a \u201cnation of immigrants.\u201d (And the politically correct president certainly wouldn\u2019t argue that American Indians, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, and descendants of black slaves \u201cimmigrated\u201d here in any common sense of the word, would he?)\u2026\u2026\u2026<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In his immigration speech on Thursday, President Obama heralded America as a \u201cnation of immigrants\u201d defined not by blood or birth, but by \u201cfidelity to the shared values that we all hold so dear.\u201d If only it were so. Left-wing academics and activists spurned assimilation as a common goal long ago. Their fidelity lies with bilingualism (a euphemism for native-language\u00a0maintenance<\/span>\u00a0over English-first instruction), identity politics, ethnic militancy, and a borderless continent.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
