Which brings me to what\u00a0Obama said at an Obama Foundation event Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0about young people, social media and the demand for absolute purity of belief in all things. Here\u2019s the key bit:<\/div>\n
\u201cThis idea of purity and you\u2019re never compromised and you\u2019re always politically \u2018woke\u2019 and all that stuff. You should get over that quickly. The world is messy, there are ambiguities. People who do really good stuff have flaws. People who you are fighting may love their kids. And share certain things with you.<\/em>\u201c<\/div>\n
Obama went on to note that he is bothered by a trend he sees \u201camong young people particularly on college campuses\u201d where \u201cthere is this sense that \u2018the way of me making change is to be as judgmental as possible about other people and that\u2019s enough.'\u201d Added Obama: \u201cThat\u2019s not activism. That\u2019s not bringing about change. if all you\u2019re doing is casting stones, you\u2019re probably not going to get that far. That\u2019s easy to do.\u201d<\/div>\n

It would be easy to see Obama\u2019s comments as a shot at President Donald Trump. Because, well, Trump\u2019s entire presidency is about sending tweets and casting stones.<\/div>\n
But I think Obama is up to something much more complex \u2014 and important here. The rise of \u201ccancel\u201d culture \u2014 particularly on the left and particularly on social media \u2014 is one of the defining hallmarks of our culture in the post-Obama presidency. Say something wrong, tweet something people disagree with, express an opinion that is surprising or contradicts the established view people have of you, and the demands for you to be fired, de-friended or otherwise driven from the realms of men quickly follow.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A 10-inch painting that hung in a French woman\u2019s kitchen for so long she had no idea how it came to be in her family\u2019s possession was found to be the work of Italian artist Cimabue earlier this year. It was\u00a0expected to sell<\/a>\u00a0at auction for upwards of $6 million, but this weekend it ended up selling for\u00a0$26.8 million<\/a>\u00a0instead.<\/div>\n

The painting was discovered during a valuation of the contents of a house owned by a Frenchwoman living north of Paris by auctioneer Philom\u00e8ne Wolf who immediately suspected it was\u00a0more than just your average<\/a>\u00a0religious icon. Wolf consulted Eric Turquin, an art historian based in Paris, who, along with other researchers and colleagues, concluded the piece, called \u201cThe Mocking of Christ,\u201d was painted by the Italian artist Cimabue sometime around the year 1280.<\/p>\n

The historians used traditional techniques like infrared photography to analyze brush strokes and confirm they all came from the same hand, as well as comparing the piece\u2019s gold ornamentation to other known works by Cimabue, who\u2019s considered one of the father\u2019s of the Italian renaissance art movement. The painting is also believed to be part of a larger multi-panel piece, of which\u00a0only two other panels exist<\/a>: \u201cFlagellation of Christ,\u201d in the Frick Collection in New York, and \u201cMadonna and Child Enthroned Between Two Angels,\u201d at the National Gallery in London. As a result, the historians were able to compare the patterns of holes made by worms in the painting\u2019s poplar wood frame to the other two panels and found that many of the holes lined up, which helped further confirm the piece\u2019s authenticity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Power of poo<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n

(Reuters) \u2013 Horse power has a different meaning at the Helsinki International Horse Show as the electricity needs for the FEI World Cup Jumping qualifiers comes entirely from horse manure.<\/p>\n

More than 100 tons of manure from 370 horses was used to create 150 megawatt hours of energy that not only provided electricity for the four-day event but also heated homes in the Finnish capital.<\/p>\n

The event has generated its own electricity from manure \u2014 used to power lights, scoreboards and even charging stations \u2014 for the fifth year in a row thanks to a manure-to-energy system developed by the aptly named Fortum HorsePower.<\/p>\n
