The essence of her argument then is this: the image of God conveyed in the traditional view of hell is inconsistent with the Bible\u2019s emphasis on God as a God of love and forgiveness and grace. Don\u2019t be tempted to dismiss this simply as an old argument; the issues remain vital.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/40\/2010\/09\/LastJudg.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8621\" title=\"LastJudg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.patheos.com\/community\/sites\/40\/2010\/09\/LastJudg.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"322\" height=\"347\"><\/a>In chp 2 of Sharon Baker\u2019s <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0664236545?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0664236545\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Razing Hell: Rethinking Everything You\u2019ve Been Taught About God\u2019s Wrath and Judgment<\/a>,<\/em><\/strong> we encounter these texts and I want to mention them and then ask a question:<\/p>\n<p>2 Sam 6: poor old Uzzah is struck down for touching the ark.<\/p>\n<p>Exod 12: God \u2014 through the avenging angel \u2014 kills all the firstborn of the Egyptians.<\/p>\n<p>2 Sam 24: God sends a pestilence in which 70,000 die just because David took a census.<\/p>\n<p>1 Sam 15: God tells Saul to kill all the Amelekites, including women and children.<\/p>\n<p>1 Kings 22: God sends a lying spirit to entice Ahab.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers 16: God kills Korah and his descendants.<\/p>\n<p>Deut 7:2: God promises to destroy the inhabitants of Canaan.<\/p>\n<p>And who can forget Noah\u2019s ark.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now the questions: How do you explain these? Are these \u201cright\u201d? What is your best explanation for such events? Do you think God brought death in these events?<!--more--><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">Sharon Baker gives four typical Christian explanations, and now we ask <\/span>which of these do you prefer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">1. Divine immunity: What God does is good, regardless of how it looks to us.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">2. Higher reasons: God has good reasons even if we don\u2019t know what they are. (Thus, we are all sinners anyway so we all deserve to die.)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">3. Greater good: God sometimes commands \u201cbad\u201d things because God has a greater good in mind. Look at the bigger picture.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">4. Progressive revelation: God worked like that in the OT times because that is how those folks thought and did things. Eventually, over time, God unfolds a clearer picture of who he is.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">She then turns to the New Testament where she contends the image of God punishing his Son evokes a vengeful, violent God.
