What is the alternative?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2010\/10\/19\/how-many-versions-of-the-_n_768585.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><strong>From RNS, at HuffPo<\/strong><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBibles are in many ways a cash cow,\u201d said Phyllis Tickle, a former longtime religion editor at Publishers Weekly. \u201cThe Bible is the mainstay of many a publishing program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, some Christian scholars wonder whether too much Good News can sometimes be a bad thing, as a major new translation and waves of books marking the 400th anniversary of the venerable King James Bible inundate the market this fall.<\/p>\n<p>The assortment of translations and \u201cniche Bibles\u201d (think, \u201cThe Holy Bible: Stock Car Racing Edition\u201d) sow confusion and division among Christians, invite ridicule from relativists, and risk reducing God\u2019s word into just another personal-shopping preference, the scholars say.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we are drifting more and more to a diverse Babel of translations,\u201d said David Lyle Jeffrey, former provost of Baylor University and an expert on biblical translations. Jeffrey believes Americans need a \u201ccommon Bible\u201d \u2014 a role the King James Version played<br>\nfor centuries \u2014 to communicate the grandeur of Scripture without reducing it to \u201cshopping-center-level\u201d discourse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we have so much diversity we lose our common voice,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is in effect moving away from a common membership in the body of Christ into disparate, confusing misrepresentations of the rich wisdom of Scripture, which ought to unify us.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, there are many translations.
