Thoughts on Patriotism and the American Church<\/h1>\n

We approach another Fourth of July here in America. I have thought about the connection as well as the conflict between patriotism and the American church. There have been many great thoughts on this idea. So I wanted to share with you some of these for your consideration.<\/p>\n

First, check out my thoughts on \u201c7 Reasons a Nation Should Trust God.\u201d<\/a> No matter what nation one lives in, we need to remember that we still should trust God. I have also written on how righteousness exalts a nation<\/a> as well. You can see how liberty helps us overcome tyranny<\/a>, and how as Christians, we should proclaim freedom<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are some other things to consider this Fourth of July, and so I offer you the following links to these opinions and thoughts about patriotism and the American church.<\/p>\n

Patriotism and Christianity<\/h2>\n

Christian Crier asks: \u201cIs Being Patriotic Biblical?\u201d<\/a>\u00a0 and and shares \u201cWhat the Bible Has to Say About Patriotism.\u201d<\/a> Benjamin Corey wonders whether a failure to be a patriotic American is a sin<\/a>. Brad Williams considers \u201cThe Separation of Church and Patriotism.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Conner Woods considers whether we should be patriotic in the 21st. century<\/a>.\u00a0David Henson wonders if patriotism is even a Christian value<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Roger Olsen has some Independence Day thoughts on patriotism and nationalism<\/a>. Olsen also shares the differences<\/a> between the two, as does Gene Veith<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Christian Podcast Central has an \u201cAsk John Piper\u201d podcast about patriotism and its place in the church<\/a>.Linda LaScola warns at Rational Doubt about \u201cThe Patriotic Blind Eye.<\/a>\u201d<\/p>\n

American Patriotic Worship<\/h2>\n

Kathy Schiffer asks if you will be singing patriotic hymns<\/a> at your next Fourth of July worship service. Chris Gehrz at Anxious Bench shares a brief history<\/a> of patriotic hymns.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Aigner shares his disgust the mingling of patriotism and worship<\/a>\u00a0on \u201cFreedom Sunday\u201d at First Baptist Church Dallas. He has the inside scoop<\/a> on \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d as the newest worship song. He also provides a viewpoint<\/a> of American patriotic worship from non-Americans.<\/p>\n

Miles Mullin III wrote a guest piece at Anxious Bench criticizing David Barton, Civil Religion, and Patriotic Idolatry<\/a>. Timothy Willard at The Toolshed<\/a> reflects on C. S. Lewis\u2019s thoughts<\/a> about patriotism.<\/p>\n

Rachel Marie Stone shares an alternative Christian patriotic song<\/a> of peace.\u00a0Keith Michael Estrada has a link to a\u00a0patriotic rosary<\/a> for sale.<\/p>\n
