{"id":3733,"date":"2015-06-25T17:00:59","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T23:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/johnbeckett\/?p=3733"},"modified":"2015-06-23T10:02:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-23T16:02:56","slug":"the-pope-gets-it-a-pagan-look-at-laudato-si","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/johnbeckett\/2015\/06\/the-pope-gets-it-a-pagan-look-at-laudato-si.html","title":{"rendered":"The Pope Gets It \u2013 A Pagan Look at Laudato Si\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2015\/06\/03-08-St.-Peters.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3735\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2015\/06\/03-08-St.-Peters-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"03 08 St. Peter's\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\"><\/a>When the Pope \u2013 the leader of the oldest and largest Christian denomination in the world \u2013 issues an encyclical (a teaching letter meant to be circulated) on the environment, it\u2019s a big deal.\u00a0 Not just for the Roman Catholics for whom the teaching is authoritative, but for everyone else as well \u2013 the Catholic church still has considerable influence in world affairs.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been waiting to read it ever since I first heard about it.\u00a0 I was not disappointed.<\/p>\n<p>The title <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Laudato Si\u2019<\/a> means \u201cpraise be\u201d and comes from a canticle of Saint Francis of Assisi, the namesake of Pope Francis.\u00a0 The letter begins<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cLAUDATO SI\u2019, mi\u2019 Signore\u201d \u2013 \u201cPraise be to you, my Lord\u201d<\/em>. In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And then<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This sister now cries out to us because of the harm we have inflicted on her by our irresponsible use and abuse of the goods with which God has endowed her. We have come to see ourselves as her lords and masters, entitled to plunder her at will.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Throughout the encyclical, Pope Francis accurately and powerfully describes our origins in the Earth, our dependence on the Earth, and our desecration of the Earth.\u00a0 More importantly, he describes how our harmful actions flow from a \u201cthrowaway culture\u201d that mistakenly seeks meaning in things, and how the negative results are borne predominantly by the poor.<\/p>\n<p>If you think Laudato Si\u2019 is only about climate change, you need to <a href=\"http:\/\/w2.vatican.va\/content\/francesco\/en\/encyclicals\/documents\/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">read it for yourself<\/a>.\u00a0 It discusses the problems the poor have with access to clean water, the loss of biodiversity, the decline in the quality of human life and the breakdown of society, global inequality, and the weak responses to these problems from governments and individuals.<\/p>\n<p>Francis says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Both everyday experience and scientific research show that the gravest effects of all attacks on the environment are suffered by the poorest.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>we have to realize that a true ecological approach <em>always<\/em> becomes a social approach; it must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear <em>both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Pope grounds his argument in Christian tradition and scripture. He quotes from previous popes and various bishops\u2019 conferences.\u00a0 But he does so to inspire the faithful, not to assert the superiority of his own religion.\u00a0 Laudato Si\u2019 is an ecumenical document, in the best and widest sense of the term.\u00a0 Francis says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Given the complexity of the ecological crisis and its multiple causes, we need to realize that the solutions will not emerge from just one way of interpreting and transforming reality. Respect must also be shown for the various cultural riches of different peoples, their art and poetry, their interior life and spirituality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Though he uses the word \u201csovereignty\u201d only to refer to the independence of nations (at least in the English version), Francis clearly understands the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/johnbeckett\/2013\/03\/reclaiming-your-sovereignty.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">ancient meaning of the word<\/a>.\u00a0 He says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It is not enough, however, to think of different species merely as potential \u201cresources\u201d to be exploited, while overlooking the fact that they have value in themselves \u2026 Because of us, thousands of species will no longer give glory to God by their very existence, nor convey their message to us. We have no such right.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And in regards to the land itself, he says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Thus God rejects every claim to absolute ownership: \u201cThe land shall not be sold in perpetuity, for the land is mine; for you are strangers and sojourners with me\u201d (Lev 25:23).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That\u2019s a verse I\u2019ve heard quoted exactly zero times by Christian conservatives who love to quote Leviticus to bash gay people.<\/p>\n<p>Francis doesn\u2019t just see the problems, he also sees their causes.\u00a0 The environment, the economy, and society are inseparably intertwined.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When people become self-centred and self-enclosed, their greed increases. The emptier a person\u2019s heart is, the more he or she needs things to buy, own and consume. It becomes almost impossible to accept the limits imposed by reality. In this horizon, a genuine sense of the common good also disappears.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Technology, which, linked to business interests, is presented as the only way of solving these problems, in fact proves incapable of seeing the mysterious network of relations between things and so sometimes solves one problem only to create others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is one thing to describe a problem so immense.\u00a0 It is quite another to propose a solution.\u00a0 Pope Francis does not propose an agenda of specific actions.\u00a0 Instead, as a spiritual leader he proposes a spiritual solution.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Christian spirituality proposes an alternative understanding of the quality of life, and encourages a prophetic and contemplative lifestyle, one capable of deep enjoyment free of the obsession with consumption. We need to take up an ancient lesson, <strong>found in different religious traditions<\/strong> [emphasis mine] and also in the Bible. It is the conviction that \u201cless is more\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A constant flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment. To be serenely present to each reality, however small it may be, opens us to much greater horizons of understanding and personal fulfilment. Christian spirituality proposes a growth marked by moderation and the capacity to be happy with little. It is a return to that simplicity which allows us to stop and appreciate the small things, to be grateful for the opportunities which life affords us, to be spiritually detached from what we possess, and not to succumb to sadness for what we lack. This implies avoiding the dynamic of dominion and the mere accumulation of pleasures.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Pope Francis gets it.\u00a0 He gets our origins in Nature and our dependence on Nature.\u00a0 He gets the inherent value of every person, every species, and every ecosystem.\u00a0 He gets the damage human greed has done to Nature and to the poor.\u00a0 He gets that only a spiritual response will produce real, lasting change.\u00a0 And he proposes a Christian approach to such a response.<\/p>\n<p>As a human whose destiny is tied to our common home, I applaud Laudato Si\u2019 and I encourage my Christian friends (Catholic or otherwise) to read it and carefully consider how they can incorporate its message in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>As a Pagan, I accept the challenge to help create and promote a Pagan and polytheist spirituality that will be at least as effective in building a society that is respectful, compassionate, and sustainable.\u00a0 As a start \u2013 but only as a start \u2013 I recommend reading and signing the Pagan Community Statement on the Environment.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecopagan.com\/?page_id=25\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">The statement itself is here<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/johnbeckett\/2015\/05\/a-pagan-community-statement-on-the-environment.html\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\">my thoughts on it are here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Laudato Si\u2019 is not perfect.\u00a0 It dismisses concerns about overpopulation and it includes an irrelevant condemnation of abortion.\u00a0 And it has no implementation plan.\u00a0 While the days when the Pope could force ordinary Catholics to do anything are long gone (and that\u2019s a good thing), Francis could have instructed his bishops and priests to preach and teach on \u201can alternative understanding of the quality of life\u201d on a regular, on-going basis.<\/p>\n<p>Still, as I tell Pagans who refuse to sign the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecopagan.com\/?page_id=25\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pagan Community Statement on the Environment<\/a> because it\u2019s too weak, it\u2019s a good start.\u00a0 Thank you, Pope Francis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2015\/06\/03-05-Reno-600x300.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3736\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2015\/06\/03-05-Reno-600x300.jpg\" alt=\"03 05 Reno 600x300\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a human whose destiny is tied to the Earth, I applaud Laudato Si\u2019 and I encourage my Christian friends to incorporate its message into their lives.
