This is an almost-exact replica of the original Parthenon in Greece. It was built in 1897 for Tennessee\u2019s Centennial statehood celebration and chosen due to Nashville\u2019s reputation (or perhaps, its aspiration) as the \u201cAthens of the South\u201d \u2013 a name based on the abundance of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Greek_Revival_architecture\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Greek Revival architecture<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/Parthenon-July-2010-4x3.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5679\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5679\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/Parthenon-July-2010-4x3.jpg\" alt=\"Parthenon July 2010 4x3\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">I was there a long long time ago as part of a junior high field trip, but that was before they added <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nashville.gov\/Parthenon\/Athena\/index.asp\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Athena<\/a> in 1990. I kept meaning to visit on one of our trips (Centennial Park is only 10 miles from the airport) and this time we finally did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Visitors enter the Parthenon from the lower level \u2013 the huge temple doors are chained shut. There is an art gallery on the lower level that includes a recent series portraying scenes from Greek mythology. I\u2019m not a qualified art critic, but it looked good to me\u2026 except the painting of the Three Graces. The description didn\u2019t have their names: they are Euphrosyne (mirth), Thalia (good cheer), and Aglaea (beauty). And they looked awfully Nordic to be Greek deities\u2026 but maybe I\u2019m nitpicking.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/z-doors.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5680\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5680\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/z-doors.jpg\" alt=\"z doors\" width=\"600\" height=\"834\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">You climb a set of steep, narrow stairs to get to the temple level. When you reach the top of the stairs you turn around and there she is \u2013 all 42 feet of her. It was an awe-inspiring experience for me \u2013 now imagine what it must have been like for the ancient Greeks who weren\u2019t jaded by HDTV and IMAX!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/z-Athena.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5678\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5678\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/243\/2010\/07\/z-Athena.jpg\" alt=\"z Athena\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">I spent a few minutes letting myself be amazed by the beauty of the building and the statue. But then I tried to open a different set of eyes \u2013 was Athena really there?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Something \u2013 someone \u2013 was definitely there. What I felt was old and strong and proud. I\u2019ve never worked with Athena \u2013 I can\u2019t say for sure it was her. Maybe what I felt was the cumulative energy buildup of admirers and worshippers over the years. And yes, skeptics, I freely admit I may have seen and heard and felt what I wanted to see. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Or maybe, just maybe, Athena Parthenos looked down from Olympus and saw this cool house some folks in Tennessee built for her and decided to hang out for a while.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;\">I\u2019m going to do my best to resist the urge to overanalyze the experience and just remember it for what it was: beautiful and awe-inspiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><\/div>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yes, there really is a full-sized replica of the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee, including a 42 foot tall statue of Athena.
