It’s all about creating a sacred atmosphere with a decorating style that allows beauty and warmth to shine through.

Creating a serene and sacred space that promotes peace and comfort in the home is an essential aspect of Judaism. According to Jewish tradition, the goal is to create an environment that serves as a mini-sacred space. Within its walls, comfort and tradition work in harmony, building an environment where both family and visitors can feel God’s presence.

As a child, I recall a certain comfort in visiting my grandparents’ house. Their decorating may not have been magazine-worthy, but it was charming and cozy. There was homemade food made with love, and an overall feeling of peace inside their home—a peace I attribute to their faith in God.

All of these wonderful memories I have of my grandparents’ home have served as a reference point for creating my own comforting and sacred environment.

My sanctuary is full of vivid colors and vintage styles/ Photo by Kelley Rouland

Creating a Comforting, Sacred Space

Most everything I have has a vintage flair. I use plenty of color, and lots of warm lighting from lamps throughout the house; I rarely use the overhead lighting. The warm glow of lights fosters a soothing and relaxing atmosphere. Another way I create comfort in my home is by having plenty of warm blankets and pillows for family and guests.

I have vintage rugs throughout my house to add some personality and color to the space. Additionally, candles are a staple in my home. Lighting candles adds a sense of serenity and is a significant part of Jewish life. From celebrating holidays to lighting a memorial candle, a candle’s burning flame holds sacred meaning and is a vital part of my homelife.

“To be a Jew is to read. Even if I haven’t read all of them, they are waiting for me when I’m ready. I have sacred texts, such as the Tanakh, books on Jewish life, and just about any other kind of book you can think of. I rarely keep books on a bookshelf; instead, I have them stacked everywhere throughout the house.

Currently, the “Tenakh” and “Jewish Literacy” by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin are on the coffee table, waiting for me every morning when I wake up. Protecting our health and well-being is considered a mitzvah and is part of our commitment to serving God, plus, food made with love is always better. I cook and bake from scratch, using clean ingredients whenever possible. It doesn’t happen every day, but it’s a work in progress.

The Shabbat meal is when I take time to shine each week. It’s the meal that ushers in the Sabbath, a day for rest and spiritual enrichment. It’s my favorite time of the week. Late Friday morning, I begin by preparing the challah dough, then letting it rise until late in the afternoon. Once the dough is ready, I place it in the oven and start on dinner. One recipe that I keep going back to is fig and pomegranate brisket, which is in Adeena Sussman’s “Shabbat” cookbook. The Nosher is another excellent resource for finding recipes.

Creating a Blissful Mood in the Home

Another way I create comfort and tranquility in the home is by fostering a blissful environment. I achieve this through music and family time. About twice a week, we have a “happy hour” at home. It typically involves wine, a charcuterie board, and vintage music, such as jazz or swing. It is such a vibe! Life is too precious to wait for special occasions to live it up!

In the mornings, I always have music by Jewish artists playing in the background. Among my favorites are Nefesh Mountain, Elona Jagoda, and Elana Arian. It’s such an inspiring way to start the day. In the afternoons, I play classical and folk music. One of my new favorites is Gina Taree. Music creates a mood, and I always try to choose songs that have a blissful feel.

Creating a comforting and sacred space at home that draws in God’s presence and fosters a warm, loving, and peaceful environment is incredibly important. Home is my favorite place, and creating a serene space has been a long-standing passion of mine. I would love to learn more about your stories of creating comforting and sacred spaces.
