The Marine\u2019s faith in action<\/a>.<\/p>\nThe way he speaks with respect and honor to the fellow wearing fishnet hosiery and high heels.<\/p>\n
The way he coddles the toddler of a teen.<\/p>\n
The way he banters with the group of homeless men gathered around a coffee pot.<\/p>\n
And I see it in the way the homeless respect him.<\/p>\n
He is the real deal and they know it.<\/p>\n
Still, I worry when I hear the reports that a homeless man that was drinking coffee the morning before has stabbed someone.<\/p>\n
Homeless requires a certain mental toughness and a raw vulnerability.<\/p>\n
Mostly it just requires that every other safety net in your life has been ripped wide open.<\/p>\n
You become homeless because of a whole host of reasons, but you don\u2019t become homeless because you prefer freezing your ass off or because you like sleeping on hard concrete in a pouring rain.<\/p>\n
Living like that could turn most of us into wild-eyed loons.<\/p>\n
It might make us act in ways we never imagined.<\/p>\n
Not that any of us ever imagine we will be homeless.<\/p>\n
And that\u2019s part of the problem.<\/p>\n
We might not admit it but there\u2019s this small part of us that entertains the notion that homeless people are homeless because they aren\u2019t as smart as the rest of us, who thus far have managed to escape the fate of the homeless.<\/p>\n
The Marine doesn\u2019t think like that.<\/p>\n
He understands what most of us don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
He understands that the only thing separating \u201cus\u201d from \u201cthem\u201d are the numbers in our cell \u00a0phone.<\/p>\n
We have people we can call when things go bad for us.<\/p>\n
They don\u2019t.<\/p>\n
So he set out to become that person.<\/p>\n
The one they can call.<\/p>\n
No matter what.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s not trying to fix them.<\/p>\n
His main agenda is to be a friend to the homeless.<\/p>\n
Even if being that friend cost him his life.<\/p>\n
The way it did Jaman Iseminger.<\/p>\n
In order for love to win, somebody has to be willing to pay the cost.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why I worry sometimes.<\/p>\n
And pray often for Hugh Hollowell.<\/p>\n
