{"id":1660,"date":"2015-07-10T18:44:52","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T02:44:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/kateohare\/?p=1660"},"modified":"2015-07-10T19:02:18","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T03:02:18","slug":"stealth-catholicism-how-have-i-watched-any-given-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kateohare\/2015\/07\/stealth-catholicism-how-have-i-watched-any-given-sunday\/","title":{"rendered":"Stealth Catholicism: How Have I Watched &#8216;Any Given Sunday&#8217; &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-1999-3.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1662\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-1999-3.jpg\" alt=\"Any-Given-Sunday-1999-3\" width=\"600\" height=\"299\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2026 like, 20 times over the years, and never noticed these things?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve always been a big fan of the 1999 Oliver Stone film (he\u2019s kind of a loon, but I do like some of his movies \u2014 and we share the same birthday, so he can\u2019t be all bad) about a professional football team, and I watch it about every time it comes on TV.<\/p>\n<p>But it was not until today that realized a few things:<\/p>\n<p>When Miami Sharks coach Tony D\u2019Amato (Al Pacino) invites new quarterback Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx) over to his house for conversation and bad jambalaya, the Bible-era drama\u201dBen-Hur\u201d is playing on the TV \u2014 in particular, the very famous chariot-race scene. (The picture below shows Charlton Heston, as Judah Ben-Hur, morphing into Pacino.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-Ben-Hur.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1663\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-Ben-Hur.jpg\" alt=\"Any-Given-Sunday-Ben-Hur\" width=\"600\" height=\"323\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then later in the movie, Heston comes back in the flesh, this time playing the football commissioner \u2014 which I guess is the next closest thing to Moses in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>(Heston wasn\u2019t a Catholic, but he was an Episcopalian back when that actually meant something.)<\/p>\n<p>Also, in the climactic game of the movie, the Sharks go up against the Dallas Knights, whose uniforms have a vaguely Crusader flair (and, confusingly, there\u2019s another team actually called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coldhardfootballfacts.com\/content\/football-film-any-given-sunday\/5216\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">California Crusaders<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-Knights.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1673\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-Knights.jpg\" alt=\"Any-Given-Sunday-Knights\" width=\"358\" height=\"198\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you see below, the Knights\u2019 chaplain is dressed like a Catholic priest. But there\u2019s more to the story. Bruce Hardy, the former general manager of Texas Stadium \u2014 former home of the Dallas Cowboys \u2014 played the part, his only movie role.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-priest.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1664\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/524\/2015\/07\/Any-Given-Sunday-priest.jpg\" alt=\"Any-Given-Sunday-priest\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From <a title=\"Ex-Texas Stadium general manager Bruce Hardy has an endless supply of stories\" href=\"http:\/\/thescoopblog.dallasnews.com\/2014\/06\/45683.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a 2014 post<\/a> at <em>The Dallas Morning News<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">When the Oliver Stone-directed\u00a0<em>Any Given Sunday<\/em>\u00a0was filming at Texas Stadium, Hardy said he was giving a boy and his family a tour. On a couple of occasions, he received hostile reactions from the production staff who didn\u2019t want them around. After they yelled at him and the family, Hardy said he gave a movie staffer an ultimatum.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cYou got 10 minutes to get Oliver Stone, you and [producer] Clayton Townsend in my office,\u201d he said. \u201cI said, \u2018Oliver, I don\u2019t know where in the hell you come from, but in this area, we say \u2018thank you\u2019 and \u2018please.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Hardy told them that the next people who yelled at the staff or a visitor would get thrown off the property.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI guess they thought I was serious, because we had six weeks of the greatest filming ever,\u201d Hardy said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Hardy even got a small (very small) role in the movie as one of the team chaplains. But he said his speaking part was cut because of professional football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Unitas was supposed to cuss out some people, but Hardy said the staff couldn\u2019t get him to swear. That meant part of that scene was cut, and Hardy lost his speaking role.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Hardy says he still gets about $20 or $30 a year, after taxes, in residuals for appearing in that movie.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Oh, and Catholic actor Jim Caviezel, who played the title role in \u201cThe Passion of the Christ,\u201d played Coach D\u2019Amato\u2019s estranged son, but he wound up on the cutting-room floor (but he can be seen in DVD extras from <a title=\"Oliver Stone Collection (Natural Born Killers \/ Any Given Sunday \/ Alexander Revisited) [Blu-ray]\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Collection-Natural-Killers-Alexander-Revisited\/dp\/B0042JGGPS\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">\u201cThe Oliver Stone Collection\u201d<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">Here\u2019s a look:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Qoo7iNsH2uY\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">As for Stone (whose son Sean <a title=\"Oliver Stone's son on 'accepting Mohammed'\" href=\"http:\/\/religion.blogs.cnn.com\/2012\/02\/22\/oliver-stones-son-on-accepting-mohammed\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">may or may not be Muslim<\/a>),\u00a0his mother was a non-practicing French Catholic, and he once taught at a <a title=\"The Oliver Stone Experience\" href=\"http:\/\/www.oliverstone.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Catholic high school in Saigon <\/a>\u2014 but one could never mistake him for a friend of the Faith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">James Woods, who plays the Sharks\u2019 team physician Dr. Harvey Mandrake, is a Catholic and former altar boy who apparently once lectured Stone on the ins and outs of Confession on the set of another of his movies, \u201cSalvador.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">From <a title=\"The Religious Affiliation of  James Woods great American actor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adherents.com\/people\/pw\/James_Woods.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Adherents.com<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">James Woods (a Catholic actor who was born in Vernal, Utah) demonstrates his familiarity with Catholicism in this story he recalls from when he was starring in Oliver Stone\u2019s film\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Salvador<\/em>. From: James Riordan,\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit;\">Stone: The Controversies, Excesses, and Exploits of a Radical Filmmaker<\/em>, Hyperion: New York, NY (1995), pages 164-165:One of the greatest scenes in the movie, and the one most referred to when [James] Woods\u2019s Oscar-nominated performance is discussed, is where Boyle [the character played by Woods] goes to confessoin for the first time in thirty-two years. \u201cI remember the day we were shootin the Romero assassination scene at the church and Oliver said maybe you should do a confession,\u201d Woods recalls. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Oh really? First of all, let me tell you something, Oliver. You don\u2019t go to confession on the morning before the Mass. And he says, \u2018Well, they won\u2019t know the difference.\u2019 Right. There\u2019s like eighty million Catholics in the United States but they won\u2019t notice. Sure. And the irony is, they didn\u2019t. He was right. That\u2019s what\u2019s so aggravating about him!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"color: #000000;\">On a side note, I did <a title=\"Comic Foxx seeks 'Redemption' in new FX movie\" href=\"http:\/\/articles.chicagotribune.com\/2004-04-11\/entertainment\/0404110062_1_stanley-tookie-williams-barbara-becnel-crips\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a 2004 interview <\/a>with Foxx \u2014 who had been a QB in high school \u2014 in which he talked about being at the bottom of the end-zone pile after his character scored a game-winning touchdown by leaping over the goal line. Foxx said it was the hardest part of the role, since breathing got very difficult with several NFL-sized men playing defenders stacked on his back.
