\"Jason-Katims\"<\/a>I\u2019d be even more nervous about Hulu\u2019s new project if it weren\u2019t for the involvement of Jason Katims, whom I\u2019ve known since his days at NBC\u2019s \u201cFriday Night Lights,\u201d <\/a>one of my all-time favorite shows.<\/p>\n

Through his work on NBC\u2019s \u201cParenthood\u201d and \u201cAbout a Boy,\u201d Katims has continued to produce shows that are warm, funny, heartfelt and thoughtful (which is pretty much Katims himself \u2014 as you can see in this interview<\/a> I did with him for CatholicVote<\/em> about the unplanned pregnancy on \u201cParenthood\u201d).<\/p>\n

On Monday, March 23, streaming service Hulu announced a straight-to-series order for \u201cThe Way,\u201d a new drama from Katims and his \u201cParenthood\u201d colleague, writer\/producer\/playwright Jessica Goldberg. The Hulu blog said<\/a> the 10-part series\u00a0will\u00a0\u201cexamine a family at the center of a controversial faith-based movement struggling with relationships, marriage and power.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hulu also explains:<\/p>\n

The Way\u00a0<\/em>comes to Hulu from Universal Television and is Katims\u2019 first non-network television series and also the first to premiere on a streaming service.<\/em><\/p>\n

Katims will executive produce and showrun\u00a0The Way<\/em>\u00a0through his production company True Jack Productions, alongside Michelle Lee and Jessica Goldberg who will also executive produce the series.<\/p>\n

The Way<\/em>\u00a0will go into production this summer \u2026<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Each hourlong episode takes an in-depth look at what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want. \u201cJason Katims\u00a0and Jessica Goldberg have delivered a provocative take on a controversial, dangerous and thrilling world,\u201d said Hulu head of content Craig Erwich.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThe Way\u201d is said to be a \u201cpassion project\u201d<\/a> for Goldberg, a\u00a0native of Woodstock, N.Y., who\u00a0studied dramatic writing at NYU and Juilliard.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Variety<\/a>, Goldberg said:<\/p>\n

\u201cI love films where the political meets the personal in people\u2019s lives \u2014 really intense portraits of human beings,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

None of these early stories about \u201cThe Way\u201d mention exactly which \u201cfaith\u201d is at the center of the drama, but \u201cThe Way\u201d was a term used <\/a>by very early Christians to describe their nascent movement.<\/p>\n

The Way International <\/a>is also the name for a nontrinitarian, interdenominational ministry \u2014 which some critics have described<\/a> as a cult \u2014 based\u00a0in Ohio. Describing itself as being dedicated to \u201cBiblical research, teaching and fellowship,\u201d it was founded by Victor Paul Wierwille, a former Evangelical and Reformed Church minister educated at the Presbyterian Princeton Theological Seminary.<\/p>\n

In 2000, The Way president Craig Martindale reportedly resigned in response to a lawsuit f<\/a>rom former staff members alleging, among other things, sexual improprieties. In the end, The Way International reached an out-of-court settlement <\/a>with the plaintiffs.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll have to wait and see whether Katims and Goldberg are drawing on any of these real-world sources or are coming from a place of pure imagination \u2014 or if the \u201cfaith\u201d in question is Christian at all.<\/p>\n
