On Good Friday, I shared, over Twitter, just a few meditations on the last words of Christ during a three-hour reflection I attended at the Saint Anthony of Padua<\/a> in New Bedford, Mass. Some, in sum (in reverse Twitter<\/a> order for an easier read):<\/p>\n

*Jesus not only suffered to say his last words, He suffered because he did [say those last words].\u00a0#listen<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*Jesus asked his father to pardon those who had done HIM wrong. [Always thinking of us!]#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*Jesus was not thinking of his torment but of his tormentors.True love always shows itself in mercy<\/em> #fatherforgivethem<\/a> #lastwords<\/a>#GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*They console us with the Lord\u2019s mercy. They\u2019re also appalling: He holds us to the same standard of merciful love.\u00a0#lastwords<\/a>#GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*We are called to love like Christ did. With mercy.\u00a0#lastwords<\/a>#GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*In his indefatigable merciful love, Jesus was thinking of us on the cross.\u00a0#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*The cross! It takes our guilt away\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*The thief realized that Jesus\u2019 kingdom was only about to begin#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*His throne was made of wood and perpendicular\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a>#lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

*I ask for what the good thief asked for<\/em> \u2014 st thomas aquinas#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*This is my Friend , in whose sweet praise I all my days could gladly spend\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a> #mysongisloveunknown<\/a><\/p>\n

*The most poignant scene in all history\u00a0#beholdyourmother<\/a>#beholdyourmother<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a> #lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

*And a sword will pierce your heart as well\u00a0#simeontomary<\/a>#sorrowfulmother<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a> #lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

*She had laid her firstborn in a manger. She gathers the rest of us at the foot of the cross.To teach us how to follow her fiat.\u00a0#last<\/a> words<\/p>\n

*Jesus says to us: behold your mother. Let us not just look at her but receive her within.\u00a0#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*Silence is one of his most evocative words on the cross\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a>#lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

*Jesus knew how his psalm ends. Utterly certain of the closeness of the father.\u00a0#forsaken<\/a> #lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a> #psalm23<\/a><\/p>\n

*Total confidence in the father despite feeling abandoned. He says to us: Follow<\/em> #lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a> #fourthword<\/a><\/p>\n

*He thirsts so that we might give him permission to quench our deepest thirst\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a> #lastwords<\/a> #fifthword<\/a><\/p>\n

*Jesus thirsts.Let\u2019s not give him vinegar but our whole heart overflowing w the grace of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a> #fifthword<\/a>#lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

*Love so amazing, so divine. Demands my soul, my life, my all.<\/em>#GoodFriday<\/a> #*****<\/p>\n

*Great cry of victory.\u00a0#sixthword<\/a> #lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*The debt for our sins has been paid in full.\u00a0#DoWeHearThis<\/a>?#lastwords<\/a> #sixthword<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a> #DoWeFollow<\/a>?<\/p>\n

*He thirsts for us to say the words it is finished\u00a0#lastwords<\/a>#GoodFriday<\/a><\/p>\n

*His entire life was entrusted to the Father\u00a0#lastwords<\/a> #GoodFriday<\/a>#seventhword<\/a><\/p>\n

*Father, Into Your Hands I Commend My Spirit\u00a0#GoodFriday<\/a>#lastwords<\/a><\/p>\n

\nTweets, needless to say, do not do the three hours justice (so apologies to the last words, you, and Fr. Landry<\/a>). We also don\u2019t have to confine such meditations to Good Friday.<\/p>\n
