This is an axolotl<\/strong>\u2014a salamander originating from Mexico\u2019s Lake Xochimilco.\u00a0 Closely related to the tiger salamander, the axolotl is neotenic; that is, even as a mature animal it retains characteristics of youth. \u00a0In the case of the axolotl, neotony means it doesn\u2019t undergo metamorphosis, so the adults remain aquatic and gilled.<\/p>\n

How did I first hear about this winsome and nearly extinct species?<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, our pastor has two of them as pets.\u00a0 He\u2019s named them Jack and Jerry, after his two deacons. \u00a0(And yep, I\u2019m married to one of those deacons.)<\/p>\n
