\"\"<\/a>+ JMJ +<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

This Lent, I\u2019ve been spending a little time each day with Archbishop Fulton Sheen. \u00a0<\/strong>Things just sort of came together: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

First, a medical board completed their review of an alleged miracle,<\/strong> calling it \u201cunexplainable\u201d, and forwarded to theologians and the Pope for a final decision. \u00a0If approved, the miracle would advance Archbishop Sheen\u2019s cause, moving one of America\u2019s best-known and loved teachers and preachers along the road toward canonization.<\/p>\n

Then, I was fingering books in my bookshelf<\/strong> and came across a book I\u2019d owned but not yet read: \u00a0Through the Year with Fulton Sheen<\/a>\"\"<\/em> by Henry Dieterich. \u00a0In it, I found practical helps and brief reflections for each day of the year. \u00a0It\u2019s not just a Lenten book\u2013but since I\u2019ve just picked it up, that\u2019s been the focus of my reading thusfar.<\/p>\n

Just to give you an idea, here is Sheen\u2019s meditation for today, March 19:<\/p>\n

The Spirit and sin<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The night of the Last Supper our blessed Lord told of three effects of the Holy Spirit.<\/em><\/p>\n

One of them was: \u00a0\u201cHe will convict you of sin, because you did not believe in me.\u201d \u00a0How do we know we are sinners? \u00a0By the Holy Spirit. \u00a0Not because we break a law. \u00a0There isn\u2019t a driver who hasn\u2019t broken the law against speeding. \u00a0Did you ever lean over your steering wheel and say an act of contrition? \u00a0Nobody is really sorry for breaking a law, unless he gets caught. \u00a0The law is for the imperfect. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Our blessed Lord relates sin to unbelief\u2013\u201cBecause you did not believe in me.\u201d \u00a0If we did not believe in him, we crucified him. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

So what is sin? \u00a0Sin is hurting someone you love. \u00a0That is sin. \u00a0That is why the crucifix reminds us of our sin. \u00a0The life of each and every one of us has been written. \u00a0The crucifix is my autobiography. \u00a0The blood is the ink. \u00a0The nails the pen. \u00a0The skin the parchment. \u00a0On every line of that body I can trace my life. \u00a0In the crown of thorns, I can read my pride. \u00a0In the hands that are dug with nails, I can read avarice and greed. \u00a0In flesh hanging from him like purple rags, I can read my lust. \u00a0In feet that are fettered, I can find the times that I ran away and would not let him follow. \u00a0Any sin that you can think of is written there. \u00a0This is what the Spirit does for us.<\/em><\/p>\n
