{"id":19386,"date":"2014-05-17T19:09:15","date_gmt":"2014-05-18T00:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/?p=19386"},"modified":"2016-09-30T15:53:12","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T20:53:12","slug":"the-amazing-rock-cut-churches-of-lalibela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/2014\/05\/the-amazing-rock-cut-churches-of-lalibela\/","title":{"rendered":"The Amazing Rock-Cut Churches of Lalibela"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong>Recently I came upon this photo of worshippers<\/strong> gathered for Mass in Ethiopia:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Ethiopia-Mass-underground-church.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19387\" title=\"Ethiopia - Mass - underground church\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Ethiopia-Mass-underground-church-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWHAT?\u201d I thought. \u201cWhere is this?!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And so began my research into the fantastic rock-cut underground churches in Lalibela.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19392\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Church-of-St.-George.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19392\" title=\"Lalibela - Church of St. George\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Church-of-St.-George-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Church of St. George, Lalibela<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong>In the twelfth century,<\/strong> King Lalibela, a member of the Zagwe dynasty which had seized the throne of Ethiopia around 1000 A.D., sought support from the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. \u00a0To garner support, he commissioned a series of <strong>twelve extraordinary churches<\/strong> in the small town of Roha (now renamed Lalibela). \u00a0He hoped to create a New Jerusalem, a pilgrimage site for Christians who could not make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"><strong>The sacred architecture of Roha<\/strong> was not like that in the Holy Land, though. \u00a0Roha\u2019s churches were actually underground excavations. \u00a0According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sacred-destinations.com\/ethiopia\/lalibela\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sacred-destinations.com<\/a>: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19394\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19394\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Stone-church.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19394\" title=\"Lalibela - Stone church\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Stone-church-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19394\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beta Medhane Alem (House of the Savior of the World)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>Each church was created by first carving out a wide trench on all four sides of the rock, then painstakingly chiseling out the interior. The largest church is 40 feet high, and the labor required to complete such a task with only hammers and chisels is astounding.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Popular legend has it that\u00a0<strong>angels<\/strong>\u00a0came every night to pick up where the workmen had left off. One of the churches, Bet Maryam, contains a stone pillar on which King Lalibela wrote the\u00a0<strong>secrets<\/strong>\u00a0of the buildings\u2019 construction. It is covered with old cloths and only the priests may look on it.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19396\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Bet-Merkorios.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19396\" title=\"Lalibela - Bet Merkorios\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2014\/05\/Lalibela-Bet-Merkorios.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bet Merkorios<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>King Lalibela\u2019s project for gaining the church\u2019s favor had two unexpected results: the creation of a holy place of unparalleled beauty and the\u00a0<strong>king\u2019s conversion<\/strong>\u00a0to a religious life. After laboring for 20 years, he abdicated his throne to become a hermit, living in a cave and eating only roots and vegetables.
