Did Jesus Really Have Brothers and Sisters?"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><blockquote><p><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201c<\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are his sisters here with us?\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u2013Mark 6:3<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>DID JESUS HAVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS? <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The Gospel of Mark would seem to say so.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And not only in the Gospel of Mark. \u00a0In Luke 8:19-21, the topic comes up again. Jesus is told by a crowd gathered to hear him speak. \u00a0The crowd says,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But Jesus, rather than inviting the rest of his family to come on in, dismisses them\u2013using the opportunity to teach about the closeness he feels toward those who keep his word. <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u201cWho are my mother and my brothers?\u201d <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">he asks. <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>\u201cMy mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>* * * * *<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Among Protestant scripture scholars, <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">there are some <\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">who point to verses like this as clear evidence that Mary did, in fact, have other children with Joseph after giving birth to Jesus. Biblical scholar James Tabor (Chair of Religious Studies, U-NC Charlotte) lists them on his <a href=\"http:\/\/jamestabor.com\/2012\/12\/27\/sorting-out-the-jesus-family-mother-fathers-brothers-sisters\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">blog<\/a>: <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #373737;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">James, Joses, Judas, and Simon and, by some accounts, Mary and Salome. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The Catholic Church, however, rejects such claims<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>\u2013which fly in the face of the Church\u2019s dogmatic teaching about the perpetual virginity of Mary.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So where do Catholics get this idea that Mary never had sex, never bore other children? And why would Joseph have accepted that agreement, anyway?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">* * * * *<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>WHO IS YOUR BROTHER?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In everyday speech, it\u2019s not uncommon to refer to someone as your \u201cbrother\u201d<\/b> when there is no physical blood relationship. Two native Americans may call one another \u201cbrother,\u201d although they are not related; two African-Americans may do likewise. We Christians are all \u201cbrothers in Christ.\u201d The term \u201cbrother\u201d may refer to someone with whom you share a blood relationship; or it may refer to someone who is not biologically related, but with whom you share a common friendship or an ethnic bond.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In the Scriptures, the same is true. <\/b> The Greek term for \u201cbrother\u201d, <strong><i>\u201cadelphos,\u201d<\/i> <\/strong>may refer not only to blood relatives, but also to distant cousins or, more widely, to others with whom one shares a spiritual bond. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Consider, for example, Genesis 13:8:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>So Abram said to Lot, \u201cLet\u2019s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and mine, for we are brothers.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>In this instance the term \u201cbrother\u201d is used<\/b> to describe Abraham and Lot\u2014who are not biological brothers but are, rather, uncle and nephew. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>And St. Paul, writing his first letter to the Corinthians<\/b> (15:6), describes the people who saw Jesus after his Resurrection, including his \u201cbrothers\u201d: <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i>Then, he [Jesus] appeared to more than five hundred brothers at the same time, many of whom are with us still, but some have fallen asleep.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Surely, Paul wasn\u2019t trying to claim that Mary had given birth to more than 500 children!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">* * * * *<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>But there are other ways, as well,<\/b> that the Gospel writers prove that Jesus was an only child. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">We know, from the Gospels and from the Acts of the Apostles, as well as from ancient texts, what happened to the Twelve after the Resurrection of Christ. We read of their exploits, spreading the Gospel in foreign lands; suffering martyrdom rather than denying Jesus, whom they know to be the Christ. We know how they died, and where they are buried. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Do the Gospels tell us anything <\/b>regarding Jesus\u2019 brothers? Nope, nothing, nada. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Standing at the foot of the Cross were Mary, mother of Jesus, the two other Marys\u2014Mary of Cleophas and Mary Magdalen\u2014and the apostle John. As he was dying, Jesus gave Mary to John. His words were <i>\u201cWoman, behold your son.\u201d<\/i> And to John, he said, <i>\u201cBehold your mother.\u201d<\/i> And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. (John 19:26-27).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>If Jesus had had other brothers and sisters,<\/b> wouldn\u2019t they have been there with him, standing alongside his mother? And wouldn\u2019t they have assumed responsibility for their mother, taking her into their homes? <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>If there had been another blood relative<\/b> who could provide for Mary, why would Jesus have entrusted her to John?<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Another hint: <\/b> The \u201cbrothers\u201d of Jesus cited in John 2:1 and Acts 1:14 are never called the children of Mary, although Jesus himself is.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"CENTER\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">* * * * *<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>THE TEACHING AUTHORITY OF THE CHURCH<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p>There is yet another reason, though, why we should believe that Mary did not bear other children. That is the <b>consensus of the early Church.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Remember that Jesus promised that he would send the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who would guide his Church and preserve her from error. Without that promise of Christ, his followers and their descendants could veer farther and farther from Truth, losing their way altogether through false teachings and misguided prophecies. However, we do have Christ\u2019s promise that he would be with us always, until the end of time. With the protection of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity and of the Holy Spirit, we can rest assured that the Church will preserve the Gospel message with fidelity.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>From the earliest days following the Resurrection,<\/b> the Church has believed that Mary was a perpetual virgin, and that Jesus had no biological brothers or sisters. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>A non-canonical but highly respected work<\/b> from around 150 A.D., the <i><b>Protoevangelium of James<\/b><\/i>, speaks of Mary as a consecrated virgin since her youth. The <i>Protoevangelium<\/i> explains that St. Joseph was an elderly widower with children, who was chosen to be Mary\u2019s spouse for the purposes of guarding and protecting her, while respecting her vow of virginity. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That viewpoint\u2014that Joseph had children by a previous marriage, who became step-siblings to Jesus\u2014was shared in the fourth century by Epiphanius, bishop of Salamis. \u00a0It is also believed by many in the Orthodox Church today.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Athanasius of Alexandria, in his <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>Four Discourses Against the Arians<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">, wrote in A.D. 360:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>Therefore let those who deny that the Son is from the Father by nature and proper to his essence deny also that he took true human flesh of Mary Ever-Virgin.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>St. Jerome<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">, writing in A.D. 383 about the Perpetual Virginity of Mary in a debate with Helvidius, said:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>You say that Mary did not continue a virgin: I claim still more that Joseph himself, on account of Mary was a virgin, so that from a virgin wedlock a virgin son was born.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">And in the next century, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><b>Pope St. Leo I<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> delivered a sermon in which he said:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>The origin is different but the nature alike: not by intercourse with man but by the power of God was it brought about: for a Virgin conceived, a Virgin bore, and a Virgin she remained.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">Today, the <\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i><b>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/em><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"> (501) reconfirms the same point:<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', 'Bitstream Charter', Times, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\"><i>Jesus is Mary\u2019s only son, but her spiritual motherhood extends to all men whom indeed he came to save: \u201cThe Son whom she brought forth is he whom God placed as the first-born among many brethren, that is, the faithful in whose generation and formation she co-operates with a mother\u2019s love.\u201d<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h5 class=\"western\"><\/h5>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIs not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are his sisters here with us?\u201d \u2013Mark 6:3 DID JESUS HAVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS?
