{"id":24108,"date":"2014-11-22T13:00:45","date_gmt":"2014-11-22T18:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/?p=24108"},"modified":"2014-12-26T18:44:19","modified_gmt":"2014-12-26T23:44:19","slug":"iconic-cross-on-irelands-highest-peak-has-been-cut-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/2014\/11\/iconic-cross-on-irelands-highest-peak-has-been-cut-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Iconic Cross on Ireland&#8217;s Highest Peak Has Been Cut Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p>Carrountoohil,<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0the central peak of the\u00a0<\/span>Macgillycuddy\u2019s Reeks\u00a0<span style=\"color: #252525;\">range, stands 1,038 feet high and is Ireland\u2019s tallest mountain peak. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For almost 40 years, a five-metre (16 foot) steel cross \u00a0has been a familiar landmark atop Carrountoohil. \u00a0It took more than 100 men to erect the heavy cross, which was brought to the mountaintop in several pieces, then assembled on site. \u00a0RT<span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">\u00c9,<\/span>RTE, Ireland\u2019s national broadcast network, filmed the installation of the cross live in 1976.<\/p>\n<p>Since that time, the Carrountoohil cross has been a familiar landmark to residents in Ireland\u2019s southwestern region. \u00a0Climbers have set that as their destination\u2013pausing at the summit to pray and to take photographs.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently within the last day or two, someone has toppled the Carrountoohil cross and shoved it westward across the mountaintop. \u00a0It\u2019s believed that an angle grinder was used to make the cut, approximately a foot from its base.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thejournal.ie\/cross-carrauntoohil-cut-down-1794036-Nov2014\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" decorated-link\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Journal<\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p align=\"LEFT\">This discovery was made today by members of the public climbing Carrountoohill in Co Kerry.<\/p>\n<p>Piaras Kelly\u00a0from\u00a0KerryClimbing.ie, who visited the site this afternoon to inspect the damage, told\u00a0<em style=\"font-weight: inherit; font-style: italic;\">TheJournal.ie\u00a0<\/em>that he believes it was carried out in the past 12 to 14 hours.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s very malicious,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said. \u00a0<em>\u201cNo matter what anyone\u2019s personal views on having crosses on peaks are, this goes beyond that. It\u2019s an iconic cross on an iconic peak. \u00a0It\u2019s not anyone\u2019s place to take things just because they disagree with them.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At this point, there are no
