Bishop Pascal Roland, bishop of the Diocese of Bellay-Ars<\/strong> in France, has ordered that the Blessed Sacrament be removed from all tabernacles in his diocese, and the tabernacle doors kept open to show that it is empty. \u00a0After thieves desecrated ten churches in the diocese since October, stealing consecrated hosts from five of them, the bishop ordered that consecrated hosts be kept in a more secure location.<\/p>\n

The Diocese of Bellay-Ars described the most recent thefts on its website<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Friday, February 6, 2015, the parishioners of\u00a0Neuville-les-Dames\u00a0, in the parish grouping of Ch\u00e2tillon-sur-Chalaronne, discovered that the\u00a0church tabernacle Saint-Maurice was fractured, and the ciborium (cup that contains the hosts) it contained had been stolen.\u00a0The same evening,\u00a0the parishioners of\u00a0Ambronay\u00a0also noticed the\u00a0theft of a ciborium at Notre Dame.<\/em><\/p>\n

Saturday, February 7 at\u00a0Vonnas was found stealing\u00a0two chalices from the St. Martin Church.\u00a0Sunday 8\u00a0February at Jujurieux\u00a0(parish grouping of Pont d\u2019Ain), the faithful have discovered that another ciborium was stolen in St. Stephen\u2019s Church\u00a0.<\/em><\/p>\n

In these four cases, the consecrated hosts were not stolen but abandoned in place\u00a0.<\/em><\/p>\n

Finally, on Saturday 7 February, the pastor of\u00a0Montluel\u00a0discovered that\u00a0the ciborium and the hosts of the Notre-Dame-des-Marais had been stolen.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Deacon Greg Kandra,<\/strong> on his blog The Deacon\u2019s Bench<\/a>, carried a translation of the bishop\u2019s formal decree, which lists two exceptions: \u00a0(1) the Blessed Sacrament may be returned to the tabernacle temporarily for adoration, if a sufficient number of faithful are present; and \u00a0(2) the hosts may be stored in a \u201cwell-secured\u201d metallic tabernacle with a resistant lock.<\/p>\n

Which brings me to this story, which I\u2019ve been meaning to share: \u00a0the Exposition Tabernacle.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Exposition<\/a><\/p>\n

Our parish is a small community,<\/strong> and we haven\u2019t a sufficient\u00a0number of parishioners available\u00a0to fill slots for Eucharistic Adoration around the clock. \u00a0Regulations concerning exposition of the Blessed Sacrament are delineated in canon law and in a document published in The Rites<\/em> vol. 1, entitled \u201c<\/em>Holy Communion and the Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Both stipulate that<\/span>\u00a0the Blessed Sacrament should not be exposed in a monstrance unless there is someone in prayer there in the chapel; so for our parish, with empty slots on the sign-up schedule, it was not\u00a0possible to have Eucharistic Adoration on a regular basis.<\/p>\n

Until we had this:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Exposition<\/a>Our pastor recently replaced the tabernacle in our parish\u00a0chapel with an Exposition Tabernacle.<\/strong> \u00a0 Ideally suited for small parishes like ours, the Exposition Tabernacle has a glass window in the front. \u00a0The tabernacle can be unlocked by an authorized person (the priest or deacon), and a consecrated host can be inserted behind the glass. \u00a0Then, the tabernacle is locked. \u00a0The gold doors can be opened by a\u00a0layperson\u00a0who stops in the chapel to pray, then closed again when the chapel is going to be unattended. \u00a0The last person to leave the chapel closes the gold doors over the glass.<\/p>\n

\"Exposition<\/a>For our parish,<\/strong> the Exposition Tabernacle\u00a0has proven to be\u00a0a welcome addition\u2013ensuring that canon law is respected, the Blessed Sacrament is protected, and the faithful who wish to pray before the Sacrament will not be disappointed.<\/p>\n
