<\/a>\u201cThe Drop Box\u201d<\/em> will be opening in theaters tomorrow for a limited three-day engagement.<\/strong>\u00a0 You really should try to see the film, which\u00a0tells the story of South Korean pastor Lee Jong-rak\u2019s efforts to save babies who might\u00a0otherwise be abandoned on the streets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nPastor Lee builds a \u201cdrop box\u201d, a rudimentary wooden box with a bell, in the wall of his home in Seoul, South Korea. \u00a0There, mothers can place their babies knowing that their own identity will remain\u00a0anonymous, and that the babies will be cared for and loved.<\/span><\/p>\n * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n Here in the United States,<\/strong> the state of Indiana is considering whether to implement a drop-box program on a wide scale. \u00a0This week, the Indiana House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill introduced by State Representative Casey Cox to install drop boxes in\u00a0hospitals, fire stations, churches, and selected nonprofits. \u00a0If the State Senate also approves the proposed legislation, Indiana could be the first state to\u00a0implement wide-scale\u00a0use of the baby boxes.<\/p>\n Representative Cox called his bill a natural progression of \u201csafe haven\u201d laws,<\/strong> which give parents a legal way to surrender newborns at hospitals and other facilities without fear of criminal prosecution for abandonment. \u00a0According to Newser<\/a>, there have been more than 2,800 safe surrenders since 1999; but more than 1,400 other children have been found illegally abandoned, nearly two-thirds of whom died.<\/p>\n * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<\/a><\/p>\n
