\n\"\"<\/a>Okay, bear with me here.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have this idea that my readers are just sitting on the edge of their seats, wailing plaintively, \u201cOh, please!\u00a0 Please!\u00a0Tell me about the Councils of the Church!\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, not really.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I do think, though, that there\u2019s a lot of pushing and pulling, prodding and plundering that goes on in the on-line world, as believers jostle to claim their First\u00a0 Place \u201cI Am Right\u201d Badges.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re not one of those folks who cares about Being Right All The Time, In Every\u00a0Conversation,<\/strong> then roll on and go read one more article about Lady Gaga.\u00a0 But I invite you to join me, sit a spell, say a silent prayer, and let\u2019s dive right in to think about some serious matters.\u00a0 Because that, after all, is what the Councils were about.<\/p>\n

Over the next few months, every wweek or so, I plan to introduce a conversation about first things: about Truth and Error, Heresy and Hearsay, Reform and Repair and Reconciliation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re gonna talk about the Councils of the Church.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In my youth, I hated studying the Councils when I could, instead, have been watching American Bandstand<\/span>.\u00a0 But now I get it:\u00a0 Those church fathers were struggling with the stuff of life, with how to live, with who we are and who Jesus is.\u00a0 Important Stuff!<\/strong><\/p>\n

A few years ago, I had the wonderful opportunity to take a wine tour of France.\u00a0 We rolled along, through fields and vineyards and over gentle hills, stopping along the way at small chapels and majestic cathedrals. \u00a0We saw statues with their hands and heads lopped off by French reformers or Albigensians, churches that had been used to stable horses during the Revolution.\u00a0 I came to realize that we were really on a\u00a0kind of Heresy Tour\u2014one that would make big bucks for the travel agent savvy enough to market it in that way and design a glossy brochure.<\/p>\n

Learning about the Church Councils is like that:\u00a0 History on the one hand, but really it\u2019s a ringside seat at a knock-down, drag-out fight for Truth.\u00a0 I like that stuff!<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll need a roadmap<\/strong>, and we\u2019ll set off\u2014like a Sunday ride in the country, we\u2019ll learn as we go, thinking and talking about the things we see along the way.\u00a0 Here\u2019s your map, and\u00a0I\u2019ll see you later.<\/p>\n

First stop:\u00a0 Who do people say that I am?<\/strong><\/p>\n
