There\u2019s trouble at the Vatican,<\/strong> where Pope Francis\u2019s much anticipated encyclical\u00a0Laudato Sii\u00a0<\/em>was leaked four days early to the Italian magazine\u00a0L\u2019Espresso<\/em>.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not immediately clear where the leak originated.<\/strong> The bootleg release was in Italian, not in English\u2014leaving American reporters scrambling to cut and paste the nearly\u00a0200 pages of text into Google Translate.<\/p>\n

Then, the Vatican Press Office stepped up<\/strong> to\u00a0insist\u00a0that it was only a draft, hence not worthy of media attention and analysis. A Vatican official later\u00a0told\u00a0Bloomberg that\u00a0the release of the draft, which broke the embargo set for Thursday, was a \u201cheinous act.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the day passed, passages of the text<\/strong>\u2014particularly a portion of the document which dealt with climate change\u2014were published in English; and there was plenty there to\u00a0excite global warming\u2019s true believers.<\/p>\n

A translation\u00a0published\u00a0by <\/strong>The\u00a0Guardian<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>opens by saying that climate change is the Earth\u2019s way of protesting \u201cirresponsible use and abuse of the goods that God placed in\u00a0her.\u201d<\/em> It continues:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have grown up thinking that we were her owners and dominators, authorized to loot her. The violence that exists in the human heart, wounded by sin, is also manifest\u00a0in the symptoms of illness that we see in the Earth, the water, the air and in living things.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One possible point of contention<\/strong> appears in Section 20, which implies that carbon dioxide\u2014the byproduct of a normal human bodily function\u2014is a pollutant:<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is true that there are other factors (such as volcanism, and the variations of the orbit of the Earth, the solar cycle), but numerous scientific studies indicate that most of\u00a0the global warming of recent decades is due to the large concentration of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and other) issued mainly because of\u00a0human activity.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In Genesis 2:15, God directs Adam<\/strong> to care for the Earth and cultivate it. Indeed, the world\u2014the ambient air and our entire ecosystem\u2014have been entrusted to our\u00a0benevolent care; and mankind must soberly reflect upon how an industrialized society will accept God\u2019s challenge to exercise dominion over the planet.<\/p>\n

Some worry, however<\/strong>, that adherents to a politicized \u201cclimate change\u201d ideology will value conservation over human life, reducing effluents by reducing human population\u2014either through contraception and abortion, or through euthanasia. But the draft does reject population control as a solution:<\/p>\n

\u201cTo blame demographic growth and not the\u00a0extreme and selective consumption of some is a way of not facing the problem.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

On Thursday,<\/strong>\u00a0Laudato Sii<\/em>\u00a0is expected to be officially released by the Vatican.<\/p>\n
