{"id":29184,"date":"2015-06-26T23:47:29","date_gmt":"2015-06-27T04:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/?p=29184"},"modified":"2015-06-26T23:47:29","modified_gmt":"2015-06-27T04:47:29","slug":"when-you-wake-up-in-the-morning-god-will-still-be-in-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/2015\/06\/when-you-wake-up-in-the-morning-god-will-still-be-in-control\/","title":{"rendered":"When You Wake Up in the Morning, God Will Still Be in Control"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong>June 26\u00a0was a hard day.<\/strong> The U.S. Supreme Court, disregarding longstanding tradition, religious belief, and the law, redefined the institution of marriage, which has throughout history been the bedrock institution upon which society is built.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a05-4 vote was hotly contested by Justice Antonin Scalia,<\/strong> who called the ruling a <em>\u201cthreat to American democracy\u201d<\/em> and quipped that if he\u2019d signed a statement like that, he\u2019d have to wear a bag over his head.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chief Justice Roberts wrote a separate dissent,<\/strong> comparing the decision to Dred Scott, which ruled that no one of African descent could be an American citizen, and arguing that t<span style=\"color: #000000;\">he majority\u2019s decision is an act of will, not legal judgment. <em>\u201cThe right it announces,\u201d<\/em> said Roberts, <em>\u201chas no basis in the Constitution or this court\u2019s precedent.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clarence Thomas warned<\/strong> that use of the judicial process <em>\u201cshort-circuits\u201d<\/em> the political process that could consider religious-freedom implications,<em> \u201cwith potentially ruinous consequences for religious liberty.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>But with five votes, five lawyers in black robes changed life for all Americans.<\/strong> The ripples of <em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em> will stretch beyond the homosexual couples who seek to marry, and will also\u00a0impact tax law, insurance policies, employment law, fair housing regulations, property and inheritance rights, \u00a0<span style=\"color: #222222;\">child custody, and child and spousal support. Cakes will be baked. Churches will be challenged. Christians\u00a0who seek to follow the tenets of their\u00a0faith will be called \u201cbigots\u201d and \u201chaters,\u201d although there is no evidence to support that scurrilous claim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><strong>SO WHAT WILL WE DO NOW?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, in the morning we\u2019ll sit up, put on our shoes and eat breakfast. Life will go on.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are the parent, the friend, the co-worker of a homosexual person<\/strong> who wants to marry, you will still love him in the morning. Perhaps you\u2019ll remember\u00a0with a special poignancy how God loves you, how His gentle hand guides you when you veer off course; and you\u2019ll try to imagine how much He also loves your son or daughter, or your same-sex attracted friend or loved one. You\u2019ll pray for your dear one, earnest, tearful prayers; but your love won\u2019t fail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are an employer,<\/strong> there may be a time of confusion; and there will be financial implications, to be sure. Vacation policies, family leave, spousal insurance, tax structures and benefits may all need to be reevaluated in light of today\u2019s ruling. But\u00a0adjust you will, and your business will continue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are a person who experiences same-sex desire<\/strong> and you plan to marry your partner, you may go through the legal channels, sign the paperwork, exchange rings, and kiss. Your friends and relatives may attend the ceremony, or perhaps they will not. If they attend, they will hope, along with you, that things will stay the same between you\u2013because they love you. If they stay away, it\u2019s not because you are not loved; rather, it\u2019s that their deep love cannot encourage you in what they sincerely believe and know to be error and sin. In the eyes of the state, you will be married. Your family and friends will come down on different sides of the fence\u2013some acknowledging the ceremony\u00a0with only a shrug, others holding onto the hope that you will reconsider and turn your face toward God. But always, they love you; always, God loves you.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life will go on.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><strong>Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.,<\/strong> archbishop of Philadelphia, in his brief statement on today\u2019s ruling, acknowledged that the Supreme Court\u2019s 5-4 decision on marriage is not a surprise. <em>\u201cThe surprise,\u201d<\/em> he said,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><span class=\"text_exposed_show\" style=\"color: #666666;\">\u201c\u2026will come as ordinary people begin to experience, firsthand and painfully, the impact of today\u2019s action on everything they thought they knew about marriage, family life, our laws and our social institutions. The mistakes of the court change nothing about the nature of men and women, and the truth of God\u2019s Word. The task now for believers is to form our own families even more deeply in the love of God, and to rebuild a healthy marriage culture, one marriage at a time, from the debris of today\u2019s decision.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Let us rise up, go in the peace of Christ, and love one another.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 * \u00a0 \u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><strong>And please, because it\u2019s a jungle out there in the ethernet, I have this request:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you are a conservative who believes that the Supreme Court erred in this decision,<\/strong> don\u2019t fill my combox and other people\u2019s comboxes with hate-filled admonishments or threats or name-calling. Don\u2019t call God\u2019s judgment down on those who think differently from you: The Spirit of God, Who makes all things right, can touch their hearts more effectively than you ever could. Your job is to love, not to hurl epithets and puff up in self-righteous indignation. Remember the old adage, \u201cYou can catch more flies with honey.\u201d Perhaps you\u2019ll never persuade others to consider your viewpoint; but for sure, absolutely you won\u2019t persuade them with vinegar.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And I have this request: If you are an atheistic, pro-gay, pro-abortion secularist,<\/strong> don\u2019t think that you can use my combox to crow about this temporal victory. Really, I\u2019m not in the mood.
