Say THAT With Your Mouth Full!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright home-thumb wp-image-2959\" src=\"https:\/\/kathyschiffer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Map-of-Constantinople2-300x270.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\">Oh, the confusion! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last time in <strong>\u201cThink This, Not That,\u201d<\/strong> I talked about the Council of Chalcedon, at which the Church ironed out the controversy over the <strong>\u201cThree Chapters\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>Nestorianism <\/strong>(which wrongly claimed that Jesus had two distinct subsistences).<\/p>\n<p>In the seventh century, one of the biggest theological crises looming at the Council of Constantinople III (680-681 A.D.) was the spread of <strong>monothelitism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Say what?<\/strong> Well, that\u2019s \u201cmono\u201d (as in \u201cone\u201d) and \u201cthelitism\u201d (as in theanthropic will\u2014as in, God\u2019s\/man\u2019s will combined, with God\u2019s will sort of superceding man\u2019s will and topping it out and bringing it into alliance with His own perfect will).<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, got it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Monothelitism<\/span> developed as a response to <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">monophysitism<\/span>.\u00a0 (Extra credit for all these big words in a single sentence!)<\/p>\n<p>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">monophysites<\/span> had claimed, back in the fifth century, that Christ had only one nature\u2014he was altogether divine, and not human.\u00a0 <strong>\u201cNo!\u201d<\/strong> shouted the 7<sup>th<\/sup> century <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">monothelites<\/span>.\u00a0 \u201cChrist had two natural wills and two natural operations, without division, conversion, separation or confusion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the Church again said \u201cNo\u201d\u2014the monothelite doctrine diminished the full nature of Christ\u2019s humanity.\u00a0 Rather, Jesus is at the same time both <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fully God<\/span> and <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fully man<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This is what the Church teaches to the present day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>That major crisis resolved, the Council made quick work of the other issues before them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They\u00a0easily approved the first five ecumenical councils.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0reaffirmed the Nicene and \u201cNiceno-Constantinopolitan\u201d creeds.<\/li>\n<li>Followers\u00a0of monothelitism were \u201canathematized\u201d (that is, a ban was pronounced by<br>\necclesiastical authority, and accompanied by excommunication).\u00a0 Among those whose work was denounced\u00a0were Sergius and his successors in Constantinople; the former pope<br>\nHonorius; and Macarius, patriarch of Antioch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright home-thumb wp-image-2961\" src=\"https:\/\/kathyschiffer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Pope-Honorius-I-190x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\">The posthumous anathematization of Pope Honorius has been held by some Protestants as proof against the Catholic teaching of papal infallibility.\u00a0 This is a common misunderstanding:\u00a0 Actually, papal infallibility is not a guarantee that popes will not make mistakes or even that they will not sin.
