On October 24, 1948, television station WJBK began broadcasting to the Detroit Metro area<\/strong> as a Dumont Network affiliate, owned by George B. Storer.\u00a0 In 1949, WJBK was the first station in Michigan to produce live telecasts of Detroit Lions and Detroit Tigers games.\u00a0 In 1952, Dumont Network went out of business and the station became a CBS affiliate; in 1994, it switched again to broadcast as a Fox Network station.<\/p>\n Not a huge fan of television, I would say \u201cWho cares?\u201d except for a little tidbit<\/strong> I heard on WWJ\u2019s radio news this morning.\u00a0 According to FCC regulations, call letters for stations east of the Mississippi begin with the letter \u201cW\u201d and those west of the Mississippi begin with \u201cK.\u201d\u00a0 Every station\u2019s call letters stand for something:\u00a0 Chicago\u2019s WGN, owned by the Chicago Tribune<\/span>, stands for \u201cWorld\u2019s Greatest Newspaper\u201d).\u00a0 The university-owned station of West Virginia University in Morgantown is called WWVU.<\/p>\n But today I heard that the call letters of WJBK\u2014which were certainly chosen by the founders\u2014stand for \u201cJesus Be Kind.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n In its early days, WJBK had its studios in the Masonic Temple in Detroit.\u00a0 After several moves, the station now broadcasts from its present location on West Nine Mile Road, a few miles down the street from my house.<\/p>\n In the late 1960s,<\/strong> WJBK aired sci-fi and horror films on Saturday afternoons, with host Sr. Graves Ghastly, a lovable if unlikely vampire played by Lawson J.
