{"id":5206,"date":"2011-12-12T17:24:52","date_gmt":"2011-12-12T22:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kathyschiffer.com\/?p=5206"},"modified":"2016-09-30T16:00:21","modified_gmt":"2016-09-30T21:00:21","slug":"rosebud-you-absolutely-cant-take-it-with-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/kathyschiffer\/2011\/12\/rosebud-you-absolutely-cant-take-it-with-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Rosebud:  You Absolutely Can&#039;t Take It With You!"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><p><strong>Ain\u2019t that the truth?!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft home-thumb size-medium wp-image-5208\" src=\"https:\/\/kathyschiffer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/Oscar-for-Citizen-Kane-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\">Was Orson Welles thinking about eternity<\/strong> when he scooped up the Academy Award for his blockbuster hit film <strong>\u201cCitizen Kane\u201d<\/strong>?<strong>\u00a0<\/strong> Probably not\u2014just as you and I are\u00a0not usually thinking about eternity when we acquire a bigger home, the newest electronic gadget, another item for our collection of DVDs, athletic jerseys, or teacups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Welles was a young man of 25<\/strong> in 1941 when he wrote, directed and starred in the film which was voted \u201cbest film of the previous century\u201d by the American Film Institute.\u00a0 <strong>In the movie, Welles played a fictional media tycoon<\/strong> (based loosely on the life of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst).\u00a0 In his ruthless pursuit of power, Welles\u2019 character acquires more and more property, more wealth, more prestige\u2014but at the end of his life, it\u2019s not his worldly riches which he remembers but the sled he had enjoyed in the innocence of childhood.\u00a0 <strong>His dying word was the name of the sled:\u00a0 \u201cRosebud.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Orson Welles died on October 10, 1985; but his legendary film lives on.\u00a0 Considered by many film critics to be the greatest film ever made, \u201cCitizen Kane\u201d was re-released on Blu-ray in a special 70<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary edition on September 13, 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Welles\u2019 much-deserved Oscar will be going on the auction block this month, according to Sam Heller of Nate D. Sanders Auctions, a Los Angeles auction house.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An attempt to auction the famed trophy in 2003 was stopped by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which testified that the award\u2019s value at that time was at least $1 million.\u00a0 The Academy has aggressively challenged efforts to sell Oscars in the past, and successfully stopped the sale of two Oscars which had belonged to silent screen star Mary Pickford.\u00a0 A more recent court ruling, however, has cleared Welles\u2019 prize for sale, after a ruling in 2004 that Welles had never signed the Academy\u2019s agreement not to sell the trophy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So the Motion Picture Academy wants to hold onto the Oscar; so, most likely, did Orson Welles hope to keep it.\u00a0 <strong>The thing is, though, you really CAN\u2019T take it with you.\u00a0<\/strong> Orson Welles walked into eternity and met the Lord Jesus, just as you and I will, alone\u2014with none of the riches \u00a0acquired during life, but
