The Nuns on the Bus<\/strong> think the pivotal descriptor for Catholics is social justice. How do you respond to your brother who is hungry, or who has come from a far-away land in search of a better life?<\/li>\n
Some conservatives<\/strong> out there in the blogosphere think the people in the pews, the diocesan priests, even the bishops aren\u2019t \u201cCatholic\u201d enough.\u00a0<\/li>\n
Ultra-liberal Nancy Pelosi<\/strong> says that her Catholic faith \u201ccompels\u201d her to support same-sex marriage. $\"\"$ <\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Now this week, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia got into the act,<\/strong> attempting to block the Vatican\u2019s purchase of rights to the .catholic <\/strong>domain name because \u201cit cannot demonstrate that it possesses a monopoly over the term \u2018Catholic\u2019\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
In its formal complaint to ICANN<\/strong>, the body in charge of web addresses, the Saudi Communication and Information Technology Commission said: \u201cMany other Christians use the\u00a0term \u2018Catholic\u2019 to refer more broadly to the\u00a0whole Christian Church regardless of denominational affiliation\u2026.\u00a0Other Christian communions lay claim to the term \u201cCatholic\u201d such as the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church\u2026\u00a0 Therefore, we respectfully request that ICANN not award this.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
It\u2019s not only the .catholic<\/strong> domain that has worked up the Saudi government, which is controlled by the royal family.\u00a0 Other religions, too, should not\u2014according to the Saudis\u2014be permitted to have their own domain names.\u00a0 They\u2019ve also asked that bids be denied for .islam, .halal<\/strong> and .ummah<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And according to a report by The Telegraph<\/a>,<\/p>\n
The Kingdom also made moral complaints about an array of planned new suffixes.<\/p>\n
It said .baby<\/strong>, which three bidders including the baby powder maker Johnson & Johnson have applied to create, could be used to host and promote pornography.<\/p>\n
\u201cPornography undermines gender equality and threatens public morals by objectifying and exploiting women,\u201d<\/em> the Saudi government said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe values expressed in pornography clash with the family concept and they undermine the traditional values that promote marriage, family, and children.\u201d<\/p>\n
It objected to .gay<\/strong> because it \u201cwill be offensive\u201d<\/em> to societies where homosexuality is \u201ccontrary to their culture, morality or religion\u201d,<\/em> to .tattoo as tattooing is prohibited in Islam and Judaism and to .bar on grounds that because of its association with alcohol the term \u201cpromotes activities that can be detrimental to public order and morals\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n
A similar plan to create a .pub<\/strong> top-level domain aimed primarily at British landlords also raised Saudi hackles. Sir Richard Branson will have to fight objections from the Gulf power if he is to create .virgin<\/strong>, too.<\/p>\n
The Saudis also objected to gambling-related applications in moral terms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
In all, the Saudi government has raised 160 objections to the planned new suffixes.\u00a0<\/strong> It remains to be seen whether ICANN, to which the Vatican has already paid a $185,000 fee to create the new .catholic<\/strong> domain, will return the funds and deny the Vatican the new domain.<\/p>\n
