I say \u201cobstinate\u201d for the truth on this point has been stated so repeatedly that it seems impossible that it should not have been, at least to a great extent, accepted in the Protestant world by this time, had it not been for a firm determination not to accept it, and to regard us as either deceivers or deceived regarding it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\" align=\"right\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u00a0<em>George Mary Searle (1839-1918),<\/em><\/span> <em> <span style=\"color: #993300;\"> American astronomer and clergyman<\/span><\/em> <em> <span style=\"color: #993300;\"> and professor at The Catholic University of America,<\/span><\/em> <em> <span style=\"color: #993300;\"> writing about Indulgences in\u00a0<\/span><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=4aZFAAAAIAAJ&amp;pg=PA221&amp;lpg=PA221&amp;dq=indulgences,+misunderstanding&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=4r1zQkvK_1&amp;sig=4gCW27CorKeK-sJSvDfcKq-AUgs&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=PuStTtfmD9CFsALKgtSFDw&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=10&amp;ved=0CFQQ6AEwCQ#v=onepage&amp;q=indulgences%2C%20misunderstanding&amp;f=false\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em><span style=\"color: #993300;\">\u201cPlain facts for fair minds:<\/span><\/em> <em> <span style=\"color: #993300;\"> an appeal to candor and common sense\u201d<\/span><\/em> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30733\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2012\/11\/mourning-804579_640.jpg\" class=\" decorated-link\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-30733\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/148\/2012\/11\/mourning-804579_640-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Image: Pixabay\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image: Pixabay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong> This week:\u00a0 Not one but TWO special days on the Church calendar.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Sunday, November 1 is the Solemnity\u00a0of All Saints.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On this day, we remembered those who have gone before us, and who now rest in the arms of our heavenly Father. \u00a0For Catholics, All Saints Day is a holy day of obligation.\u00a0 That means that even when the solemnity falls on a weekday, attendance at Mass is required unless one has a good reason to be excused from the obligation, such as illness.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Monday, November 2 is the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day).<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On All Souls Day, we remember those who have died but who have not yet achieved perfection, and so are not yet in heaven. \u00a0This \u201chalfway house\u201d where the believer is gradually conformed to Christ is called Purgatory.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>The Communion of Saints<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You say the words in the Creed:\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u201cI believe in the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. \u00a0Amen.\u201d<\/em> Catholics look to the Scriptures for their understanding of the Communion of Saints. \u00a0The teaching is based on 1 Corinthians 12, where Paul compares all Christians to a single body. \u00a0The idea that there is a \u201ccommunion,\u201d a spiritual connection between believers who can pray for one another is reinforced in 1 Corinthians 6:17 and 1 John 1:3, as well as in other verses. In Hebrews 1:12, the saints in heaven (and the departed souls who have not yet reached the state of perfection, whom the Church teaches are in purgatory) are described as a great \u201ccloud of witnesses\u201d encompassing Christians on earth.<\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It is probable that there is among Protestants a more obstinate\u2014for I really must say so\u2014a more complete misunderstanding on this point of doctrine than on any other.
