\"\"<\/a>Where in the Bible do we learn that the Virgin Mary\u2019s parents were named Anna and Joachim?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Can\u2019t figure out what chapter and verse it is?<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s because it\u2019s not really in the Bible.\u00a0 Saint Anna and Saint Joachim (sometimes spelled \u201cIoacim\u201d) show up in a separate book called the Protoevangelium of James<\/em> or, more simply, the Gospel of James<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Not one of the canonical gospels, the Gospel of James<\/em> is considered apocryphal<\/strong>\u2014not part of the divine revelation, although elements may, in fact, be historical.\u00a0 It was probably written about 145 A.D. and takes a look back into Mary\u2019s and Jesus\u2019 lives, revealing details not found in Scripture.\u00a0 Some of the stories seem unlikely, but others (such as the details regarding the life of Anna and Joachim) have become familiar.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s in the Gospel of James<\/em> that we see the story of Mary\u2019s Presentation at the Temple.<\/strong>\u00a0 From infancy, the story tells us, Anna and Joachim\u2014devout parents grateful that God granted them a child in their later years\u2014dedicated her to God.\u00a0 When she was three years old, Mary\u2019s parents took her to the Temple in Jerusalem, where she would live and learn to serve in the Temple worship.\u00a0\u00a0 Mary remained in the Temple until she reached puberty, when she was betrothed to Joseph.<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n

All this is to explain the Feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which the Church observes on November 21.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Italian artist Titian,<\/strong> the most prominent 16th<\/sup> century artist in the renowned Venetian school, recreated the story of the Presentation in oils.\u00a0 The painting is displayed in Venice\u2019s Gallerie dell\u2019Accademia.<\/p>\n
