Scottie Scheffler Wins The Open

Scottie Scheffler Wins The Open

Today, twenty-nine year old American pro golfer Scottie Scheffler continued his dominance of professional golf as the #1 player in the world the past 2.5 years by shooting a 3-under par 68 to win the 153rd (British) Open by four strokes with a 17-under par total of 267 at the Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. American Harris English finished alone in second place at 13-under par, four strokes behind.

Scheffler Stayed Safely Ahead of a Bunched Pack

Scheffler started the day with a four stroke lead. He quickly increased that to a seven stroke lead by going three under par his first six holes. After seven holes, there was an amazing group of players tightly bunched but way back, with five players tied for second place, and thirteen players within two strokes of them.

Scheffler hit his first speed bump for the week at the par four eighth hole where is drove into a pot bunker and failed to get out on his first stroke from there, finishing the hole with a double bogey six to then lead by only four strokes. But he soon righted the ship, regained most of his lead, and sailed in to the clubhouse to post a win by four strokes.

Scheffler Won His Fourth Major

It was Scheffler’s fourth major championship win. He achieved an interesting statistic today by wining his fourth major after winning his first major in the same number of days after Tiger Wood did the same—1,197 days apart. That is one of many reasons the golf world is beginning to compare Scottie Scheffler to the great Tiger Woods.

So, since only 2022, Scottie Scheffler has now won two Masters, one PGA Championship, and one Open. That leaves him only needing a U.S. Open win to complete a career Grand Slam, which is to win all four majors. The #2 golfer in the world and crowd favorite this, Irishman Rory McIlroy, completed the career Grand Slam this year in emotional fashion by winning The Masters Tournament after being major winless for something like ten years.

Today, Scheffler joined an elite group of only three other golfers who have won all three of these majors before reaching their thirtieth birthday. They are Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

Scheffler Is a Member of PGA Tour Bible Study

As I have mentioned many times on my blog about Scottie Scheffler, he is a prominent member of the PGA Tour Bible Study that meets weekly on the PGA Tour.

[Look for Kermit Zarley’s new book to be published early next month entitled Christ on the PGA Tour (1965-1982). It will be the first book ever written about the burgeoning Christian movement on the American pro golf tour. And it will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the PGA Tour Bible Study, which was cofounded by Kermit.]
