\u00a0<\/strong>A friend of mine, Karen Stephenson Slappey,\u00a0reached out to me the other day to ask if I would still be willing to share a word or two about a community making project that she is working on in Atlanta. Shem along with some friends, have launched Beer and Hymns, reminiscent of the much beloved sessions at Wild Goose Festival at Manual\u2019s Tavern in Atlanta. I had offered to help get the word out a couple of months ago before\u00a0my journey \u00a0took a turn down a winding path searching for Christ o<\/a>utside the church and without the name Christian<\/a>. I think that maybe events such as Beer and Hymns can be a space where holy community can happen even though for me right now it is still a bit too Christian-centric (of a Mainline flavor). But when I attended previously I was indeed moved by the true sense of searching, the longing for God and a grace filled pop-up community that happened in that old Atlanta bar.<\/p>\n

Rather than trying to write more I invited Karen to write a guest post that might address the post denominational and post Christian crowd energy that is percolating around this initiative.<\/p>\n

So friends, meet Karen.<\/p>\n

This past Ash Wednesday I had the occasion to walk into a bar wearing my clerical collar.\u00a0 I am not usually in the practice of doing such things, but I was between services and I needed to run to Manuel\u2019s Tavern, in Poncey-Highlands to confirm the date and time for a night of Beer and Hymns.\u00a0 Atlanta is a pretty cynical place, in spite of the fact that its full of conservatives and it\u2019s the buckle of the Bible Belt; maybe these things are related.\u00a0 Anyway, as I walked into Manuel\u2019s I was accosted by a woman who grabbed me by my shoulders and began asking questions:<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>\u201cAre you a priest? Can you give me ashes? Wait! What are you doing here?\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was about to answer her when she said, \u201cI am so far from God.\u201d<\/strong> And then she stopped talking.\u00a0 Though my fingers were stained black from administering ashes just a short time before, I had none to give her except those that were on my own forehead.\u00a0 So, with my thumb I rubbed my forehead and then rubbed hers, and making the sign of the cross, I reminded her that she was dust and to dust she would return right there in the middle of the bar. It became holy ground. My new friend hadn\u2019t been to church in years, and didn\u2019t feel like she could go because she wasn\u2019t good enough.\u00a0 She would not go to church, but she had no problem stopping a minister in a bar and asking for ashes.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I tell this story because the day after the first Beer and Hymns, I walked into school and was greeted by some of my fellow classmates. I am a seminarian in Atlanta. I was asked by one student how the evening went, but another wanted to know the point of the whole thing. Did we just sit around, sing, and get drunk? There have been a few people who have shared skeptical sentiments regarding the fact that most of my evangelism involves beer, and usually my response is something like, \u201cWell, it\u2019s good to be Lutheran\u201d. <\/strong>\u00a0But, I don\u2019t think a smart-alec response is really the way to go anymore.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s be real with each other\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Church as an Institution has messed up. There are people who would rather go to the dentist than walk through the doors of a Church.\u00a0It doesn\u2019t matter how hip your minister of music happens to be, and it doesn\u2019t matter how cool your programming is, there are people who will never\u2026ever\u2026walk into your church.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>So, here\u2019s what I propose: Let\u2019s get out of the church! <\/strong>And while we\u2019re at it, let\u2019s stop doing church for ourselves.\u00a0 By this I mean, let\u2019s stop perpetuating the Institution for the sake of the Institution\u2026and, ahem, clergy,<\/em> our own employment security. Let\u2019s stop looking at pie charts and bar graphs that toll the bells of decline and do something about it.\u00a0 In fact, let\u2019s burn the damn charts. Let\u2019s stop referring to people who are outside the church as spiritual but not religious. Since when is religion a good thing anyway? And we should probably stop using dichotomies like outside\/inside, it\u2019s just another way of saying them and us.<\/p>\n

So yes, my evangelism does involve beer.\u00a0It also involves conversation, conversation around a table. If this doesn\u2019t seem like the right thing for you, don\u2019t come. <\/strong>There\u2019ll be more beer for the rest of us.<\/p>\n

If this seems like your kind of thing, please join us.\u00a0 We are a gathering of seekers, sinners, and saints. We bring our baggage and stand shoulder to shoulder with other people who share our same doubts, fears and religious PTSD, because some of us have experienced real trauma at the hands of the Church. \u00a0We don\u2019t have it all figured it out, but singing and sharing a drink together seems like a good place to start. All are welcome, and means all!<\/strong><\/p>\n
