In 1971 John Lennon wrote \u201cImagine,\u201d a track on the album of the same name. The song\u2019s lyrics encourage the listener to imagine a world at peace.<\/p>\n

The impediments to a world at peace, according to the song, are living for fear of punishment or hope of reward rather than focusing on the present, religion, violent nationalism, and materialism. These factors are presented as divisive, working against unity and peace.<\/p>\n

In 1971 when\u00a0Imagine<\/i>\u00a0was released the U.S. was just entering the second decade of involvement in Vietnam. Eighteen-year-olds had just gotten the vote. Carroll O\u2019Connor was offering a gallows humor version of a sexist racist on the CBS sitcom\u00a0All in the Family.<\/i> It was just three years after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. That year the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools. Several major cities including Chattanooga and Camden experienced incidents between police and ethnic minority citizens that sparked riots. While a majority of Americans identified themselves as Christian and as church goers,\u00a0Imagine<\/i> apparently appealed to a growing dissatisfaction with rigid governmental, religious, and social authority.\u00a0Imagine<\/i> became the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed album of Lennon\u2019s solo career. In 2012\u00a0Imagine<\/i>\u00a0was voted one of the top 500 albums of all time at #80 in the list.<\/p>\n

The song ends by Lennon inviting listeners to join him so that the world may live as one.<\/p>\n

You may say I\u2019m a dreamer<\/em>
\n But I\u2019m not the only one<\/em>
\n I hope someday you\u2019ll join us<\/em>
\n And the world will live as one<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s not 1971 anymore, but forty-four years later lots of people have joined Lennon in imagining no religion.<\/p>\n

Their motivations are no doubt varied and nuanced. But one reason is that many people view religion as the culprit in the woes of our world. When religious extremists on an almost weekly basis slaughter innocent people in public places, it is not hard to understand this perspective. Others see religion as the culprit in discrimination against lesbians, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons. David Kinnaman\u2019s 2007 book unChristian: What a New Generation Thinks about Christianity\u2026and Why It Matters\u00a0<\/i> listed the reasons for the disaffection with institutional religion felt by those younger than thirty-five. One reason was that they view the church as judgmental with regard to homosexuals. Another group of people view religion as the culprit because they have suffered abuse at the hands of church leaders.<\/p>\n

Still others have no trouble at all, as Lennon suggests, \u201cimagining no religion.\u201d Because they regard religion as irrelevant. They may be among those who consider themselves to be \u201cspiritual but not religious,\u201d that is, not affiliated with any institutional religious organization. They may self-identify as atheists or agnostics. The Pew Research Center\u2019s recent statistics on America\u2019s Changing Religious Landscape<\/a>\u00a0indicate that the number of those who identify themselves as Christians has dropped sharply over the past seven years, while those who list themselves as having no religious affiliation (the \u201cnones\u201d) are increasing, and not just in the under thirty-five age group. Persons who, for a variety of reasons, have come to consider religion as irrelevant, do not feel it is a necessary requirement for surrounding oneself with a supportive community or living an ethical life that includes a commitment to social justice.<\/p>\n

In addition to those who view religion as culprit and those who view it as irrelevant, there are still others who view it as the cure. Some send members on mission trips and support initiatives to end malaria and other preventable diseases around the world. Some lobby to restrict abortion rights and\/or reverse the recent gay marriage legislation by the Supreme Court. Some work to end child poverty and to pave the way for ordination of gays in their denominations. Some are activists on behalf of those who have been abused by others, including clergy. Sometimes people of faith work together to achieve common ends and other times they work separately, seeking to achieve diametrically opposed goals. But in all this, people of faith believe religion is the cure.<\/p>\n

Well, not religion in general, but their (my) interpretation of it in particular!<\/p>\n

In December 1980 John Lennon was interviewed by\u00a0David Sheff\u00a0for a\u00a0magazine. Lennon told Sheff that\u00a0Dick Gregory, social critic and civil rights activist, had given Ono and him a\u00a0Christian prayer\u00a0book, which inspired the concept behind \u201cImagine.\u201d\u00a0Lennon told Sheff that \u201cThe concept of positive prayer \u2026 If you can imagine a world at peace, with no denominations of religion \u2014 not without religion but without this my-God-is-bigger-than-your-God thing \u2014 then it can be true \u2026 the World Church called me once and asked, \u201cCan we use the lyrics to \u2018Imagine\u2019 and just change it to \u2018Imagine one religion\u2019?\u201d That showed me they didn\u2019t understand it at all. It would defeat the whole purpose of the song, the whole idea<\/p>\n

This may sound like a strange admission coming from someone whose vocation is teaching ministerial students to preach, but I\u2019m not as concerned about the future of religion in America as I am about the future of God in America. God is not the culprit in our violent, greedy world. God is not irrelevant in our superficial, individualistic, acquisitive culture. God is not the cure for the woes of our world. Not without the response of human beings who allow God to work through us, healing our craving for power, and encouraging us to support one another in communities of care that are attentive to the pain of those on the outskirts.<\/p>\n

Protestant churches in America need to revisit the concept that the example that we have in Christ was never about religious organization or hierarchy. Christ spent his earthly time fully engaged with those around him, without prejudice and with an unfathomable, unconditional love. The church cannot hide from Christ\u2019s example in the postmodern world of the internet, social media, and instant communication. As churches can help their congregations focus on the example of Christ, as did the family members who lost loved ones in the Charleston murders, religion in America will continue to make a difference.<\/p>\n

I imagine a future in which people realize their wisdom is limited and that they need to be in dialogue with one another to discern God\u2019s will in the world. That future sounds a lot like the kingdom of God to me. That community sounds like what the church could be.<\/p>\n
