{"id":147,"date":"2014-04-11T17:45:00","date_gmt":"2014-04-11T22:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2014\/04\/immigration-in-the-catholic-cafeteria.html"},"modified":"2015-12-16T21:09:28","modified_gmt":"2015-12-17T02:09:28","slug":"immigration-in-catholic-cafeteria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2014\/04\/immigration-in-catholic-cafeteria.html","title":{"rendered":"Immigration in the Catholic Cafeteria"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<p>The term \u201cCafeteria Catholic\u201d was coined time ago to describe Catholics who pick and choose which Church teachings to espouse and which ones to reject. \u00a0I remember seeing a t-shirt when Pope Benedict XVI was elected that read \u201cthe cafeteria is now closed\u201d with a large picture of Cardinal Ratzinger. \u00a0This meant no more picking and choosing from among Catholic teachings, it\u2019s either all or nothing.<\/p>\n<p>The well-known American author and political activist George Weigel has always presented himself as a faithful Catholic, far from being a Cafeteria Catholic. \u00a0He is best known for his biography of John Paul II and more recently for his political opinions which tend to be conservative.<\/p>\n<p>This week Weigel has become a Cafeteria Catholic, putting political ideology before the Gospel of Jesus Christ. \u00a0Commenting on the Mass Cardinal Sean O\u2019Malley celebrated at the border in Nogales, Arizona, Weigel said, \u201cIt\u2019s not clear to me how holding Mass in these circumstances can be anything other than politicized.\u201d \u00a0He added, \u201cTo turn the Mass into an act of essentially political theater is something I thought we had gotten over in the Church, no matter how noble the cause might be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately many faithful Catholics who would not consider themselves Cafeteria Catholics share Weigel\u2019s opinion, and by doing so become Cafeteria Catholics. \u00a0My question for them would be the following: How about the Mass held each year at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC before the March for Life which calls for the repeal of <i>Roe v. Wade<\/i>? \u00a0Would Weigel call this a politicization of the Mass? \u00a0Of course not, he would call it standing up for Gospel values. \u00a0How about the Masses and events held in the past two years calling for religious freedom? \u00a0I wouldn\u2019t consider the Mass my own bishop celebrated in Savannah at Forsyth Park a politicization of the Mass, but rather a moment where he stood up for Gospel values. <\/p>\n<p>It is inconsistent to dismiss the bishop\u2019s teaching on immigration reform and to accept all other teachings. \u00a0The bishops don\u2019t run a cafeteria. \u00a0Political agendas must be subservient to Church teaching, whether its convenient or inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>Weigel continued by stating that \u201cit\u2019s not clear to me that the principles behind a Catholic approach to immigration reform have been well articulated at all.\u201d \u00a0Weigel must not have read any of the various documents published by the United States Bishops on immigration reform. \u00a0Weigel must not have watched the news report from when Pope Francis traveled to Lampedusa to speak against the suffering and injustices immigrants suffer.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately Weigel has done what he criticizes others of doing, he has put his political agenda before the teachings of the Gospel. \u00a0He has picked which Church teachings to support and which not to support. \u00a0I am disappointed with George Weigel. <\/p>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The term \u201cCafeteria Catholic\u201d was coined time ago to describe Catholics who pick and choose which Church teachings to espouse and which ones to reject. \u00a0I remember seeing a t-shirt when Pope Benedict XVI was elected that read \u201cthe cafeteria is now closed\u201d with a large picture of Cardinal Ratzinger. \u00a0This meant no more picking [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2533,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-147","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Immigration in the Catholic Cafeteria<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"The term &quot;Cafeteria Catholic&quot;
