{"id":1829,"date":"2016-05-28T11:47:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-28T16:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/admin.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/?p=1829"},"modified":"2016-05-28T11:49:19","modified_gmt":"2016-05-28T16:49:19","slug":"corpus-christi-the-beginning-of-the-story-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.patheos.com\/blogs\/labmind\/2016\/05\/corpus-christi-the-beginning-of-the-story-2.html","title":{"rendered":"Corpus Christi: The beginning of the story"},"content":{"rendered":"<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><head><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><meta http-equiv=\"content-type\" content=\"text\/html; charset=utf-8\"><\/head><body><div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: left;\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_1830\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1830\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1830 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/05\/IMG_6950-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6950\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1830\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">City of Orvieto, Italy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the summer of 1263, Peter of Prague traveled to Rome on a pilgrimage to pray at the tomb of Saint Peter bringing with him many doubts about his faith and his vocation as a priest. \u00a0After regaining his spiritual strength and calming his doubts, Peter began his journey home, stopping in the village of Bolsena north of Rome for the night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Early in the morning, before celebrating Mass at the tomb of a local 3rd century martyr Saint Cristina, Peter\u2019s faith was once again shaken. \u00a0Overwhelmed by considering the young woman who had willingly died for Christ, Peter of Prague prayed, \u201cfor the strength of soul and for that extreme abandonment God gives to those who completely trust in him.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1833\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1833 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/05\/IMG_6991-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6991\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eucharistic Procession in Bolsena, Italy, 2007. The path is lined with flower petals.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>As he celebrated Mass the host began to bleed. \u00a0The blood dripped onto the corporal which lay on the altar beneath the sacred vessels. \u00a0Amazed and overjoyed, Peter traveled to the neighboring town of Orvieto to describe what had happened to Pope Urban IV. \u00a0The Pope immediately sent his representative to bring the corporal to Orvieto for inspection. \u00a0His representative did as he was told, and once the corporal arrived to Orvieto it was kept at its cathedral rather than at the small country village of Bolsena.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1831\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1831 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/05\/IMG_6951-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6951\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Procession of Corpus Christi, 2007. Note the corporal of the miracle and the Blessed Sacrament in the procession<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One year later, 1264, Pope Urban IV declared the Feast of the Body and Blood of Our Lord, Corpus Christi. \u00a0Urban commissioned Saint Thomas Aquinas, who at that time lived in Oriveto, to compose the liturgy for the new feast. \u00a0From this commission Saint Thomas gave the Church the beautiful hymn Pange Lingua, which ends with the well-known Tantum Ergo.<\/p>\n<p>The Eucharistic miracle of Orvieto serves as a living reminder of the words of Jesus Christ, \u201cunless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. \u00a0Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. \u00a0For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is an extraordinary reminder of a simple truth: that Jesus Christ truly comes to us under the appearance of bread and wine. \u00a0Through His sacramental presence, God nourishes us by feeding us with heavenly food.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1832\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1832 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/05\/IMG_6974-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6974\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Altar where the Eucharistic miracle happened in Bolsena<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We may not have experienced a miracle like Peter of Prague, but Jesus reminds us, \u201cblessed are those who have not seen yet believe.\u201d \u00a0It is possible to see the century-old corporal at the Chapel of the Corporal in Oriveto\u2019s magnificent cathedral, but more magnificent is our ability to receive the Body and Blood of Christ Our Lord which are true food and true drink.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1834\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1834\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1834 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.patheos.com\/blogs\/sites\/613\/2016\/05\/IMG_4288-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4288\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cathedral of Orvieto where the corporal is kept today<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/body><\/html>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the summer of 1263, Peter of Prague traveled to Rome on a pilgrimage to pray at the tomb of Saint Peter bringing with him many doubts about his faith and his vocation as a priest. \u00a0After regaining his spiritual strength and calming his doubts, Peter began his journey home, stopping in the village of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2533,"featured_media":1831,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[217],"tags":[25,58,232,111],"class_list":["post-1829","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-article","tag-bolsena","tag-eucharistic-miracle","tag-italy","tag-orvieto"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v21.1 -
