Today I came across a video of the Dives in Misericordia Parish or Jubilee Church built in the Roman suburb of Tor Tre Teste for the celebration of the new millennium. \u00a0The video referred to it as the \u201cmost spectacular\u201d church of Rome, but I have to disagree. \u00a0I can say without hesitating that it\u2019s \u201cthe most surprising\u201d or \u201cthe most unconventional\u201d church, but I find it impossible to say it\u2019s more spectacular than many of the architectural gems of the Roman Church.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Before leaving Rome in 2009 I decided to visit the controversial modern structure which people either hate or love. \u00a0It was a long journey from the seminary. \u00a0The 100-minute trip took two bus rides and one trolley ride across the city. \u00a0The church sits in the middle of working class suburban apartment buildings and stores. \u00a0Completed in 2003, it is a masterpiece of the well-known Jewish architect Richard Meier. \u00a0Though Pope John Paul II never visited the church, it was part of his church building campaign at the end of the millennium to establish new parishes in suburban Rome where there were no conveniently located churches.<\/div>\n

I went as a curious pilgrim arriving at five in the afternoon just as daily Mass ended. \u00a0I had gone supposing I would not like the church so I was shocked to find myself fascinated by the building. \u00a0The contrast between the white walls and the blue sky seen through the glass was magnificent. \u00a0Daylight filled every inch of the church. \u00a0The outer design was elaborate since it represents a boat with three sails, yet the interior was clean and simple. \u00a0It was a beautiful church.<\/p>\n

The church will continue to be controversial due to its unconventional design, and for this reason mostly, it is well worth a visit. \u00a0Watch the video by clicking here<\/a>.<\/p>\n
